PurposeThis study intends to contribute to the literature of eco-innovation by examining the pro-environmental intentions and behaviour among consumers through their understanding of eco-innovation. Thus, the relationship among eco-innovation, general pro-social attitude, generativity, environmental concern, purchasing intentions and buying environmentally friendly products and the differences of the relationship between high and low emotional loyalty and Generation Y and Z were investigated via structural equation modelling (SEM).Design/methodology/approachData were collected through an online questionnaire directed to Indian consumers, and analysis was done through partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) in two stages, i.e. measurement model and structural model.FindingsResults confirm the relationships established in the proposed model, and some differences were found between the levels of emotional loyalty and the Generations Y and Z. The research shows that individualistic norms and perceived marketplace influence play a purposeful role in transforming environmental concerns into buying behaviour towards eco-innovation-driven products.Practical implicationsFrom a policy and management perspective, the results not only imply the importance of continuous performance and environmental improvement but also those policies hindering diffusion and adoption need to be addressed. Green buying is an elusive task but can be opportunely attained by marketers by adding elements of eco-innovations and understanding mindsets of consumers to create win–win situations for themselves and consumers.Originality/valueThe results reinforced that emotional loyalty and Generations Y and Z vitally impact consumers' green buying decision within the framework of eco-innovation and cognitive factors.

The impact of eco-innovation on green buying behaviour: the moderating effect of emotional loyalty and generation

Increasing the radical yield and reducing energy consumption would enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for micropollutant degradation in water. We herein report a novel AOP coupling far-UVC radiation at 222 nm with chlorinated cyanurates (termed the UV222/Cl-cyanurates AOP) for radical generation and micropollutant abatement in water. We experimentally determined the concentrations of HO•, Cl•, and ClO• in the UV222/Cl-cyanurates AOP in deionized water and swimming pool water. The radical concentrations are 10-27 times and 4-13 times, respectively, higher than those in the UV254/Cl-cyanurates AOP and the well-documented UV254/chlorine AOP under comparable conditions (e.g., same UV fluence and oxidant dosing). We determined the molar absorption coefficients and innate quantum yields of two chlorine species and two Cl-cyanurates at 222 nm and incorporated these parameters into a kinetic model. The model enables accurate prediction of oxidant photodecay rates as well as the pH impact on radical generation in the UV222/Cl-cyanurates AOP. We predicted the pseudo-first-order degradation rate constants of 25 micropollutants in the UV222/Cl-cyanurates AOP and demonstrated that many micropollutants can be degraded by >80% with a low UV fluence of 25 mJ cm-2. This work advances the fundamental photochemistry of chlorine and Cl-cyanurates at 222 nm and offers a highly effective engineering tool in combating micropollutants in water where Cl-cyanurates are suitable to use.

A High-Radical-Yield Advanced Oxidation Process Coupling Far-UVC Radiation with Chlorinated Cyanurates for Micropollutant Degradation in Water.

The stream sediments that have been impacted by manganese (Mn) containing wastewater for decades contain not only abundant microorganisms but also organic/inorganic substances. To achieve effective treatment of manganese (Mn)-containing effluent and recovery of Mn from water/sediments, the Mn(II) sorption behaviors and mechanism on sediments of a stream in Mn mining areas were studied. In addition, the study analyzed the effects of various factors (initial concentration, solution pH, sediment dose, contact time, and coexisting cations) on the Mn sorption efficiency of Daxin sediments, and explored the contribution of microbial activity in the sediment sorption of Mn(II). The results showed that the sorption process of Mn(II) on the sediments was consistent with the Elovich and Freundlich models, and the removal of heavy metals was maximum at 40 °C (62.47–98.93%), pH = 8 (77.51%), initial concentration of 1 mmol·L−1 (95.37%) and sediment dosing of 12 g·L−1 (98.93%). The addition of 50 mM NaN3 inhibited the microbial activity in the Daxin sediment, reducing the sorption and removal rates of Mn(II) by 0.605 mg·g−1 and 8.92%, respectively. After sorption, the proportion of the Fe–Mn oxidation(iron–manganese) state in Daxin sediments decreased from 54% to 43%, while the proportion of the exchangeable state increased by 10.80%. Microorganisms in the sediment had a positive effect on inhibiting heavy metal migration and reducing the bioavailability of contaminants in the soil. Through this study, we hope to further understand the sorption and desorption mechanism of manganese by stream sediments in manganese ore areas, so as to provide a guide on the management and recovery of Mn from stream sediments in manganese mining areas.

The present work provides a review focusing on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquatic environment, with an emphasis on their occurrence, monitoring, fate, and risk assessment in the research published in the scientific literature in 2019. Several studies revealed that these organic contaminants were detected in many water bodies and suspect, nontarget, and target screening provided an efficient detection for the co-existing organic substances with complex components. Wastewater resource recovery facilities were concurrently considered as a central source, and several specific chemicals have been found to be used as chemical markers to track the source of CECs in some urban watersheds. Reliable monitoring, reliable fate/toxicity assessment, and effective removal that consider CECs as a heterogeneous group rather than single substances will be the challenges for the research community in the future.
