Environmental factors associated with cyanobacterial assemblages in a mesotrophic subtropical plateau lake: A focus on bloom toxicity.

Both community variation and phosphorus (P) fractions have been extensively studied in aquatic ecosystems, but how P fractions affect the mechanism underlying microbial beta diversity remains elusive, especially in sediment cores. Here, we obtained two sediment cores to examine bacterial and archaeal beta diversity from mesotrophic lakes Hongfeng Lake and Aha Lake, having historically experienced severe eutrophication. Utilizing the Baselga’s framework, we partitioned bacterial and archaeal total beta diversity into two components: species turnover and nestedness, and then examined their sediment-depth patterns and the effects of P fractions on them. We found that total beta diversity, species turnover or nestedness consistently increased with deeper sediment layers regarding bacteria and archaea. Notably, there were parallel patterns between bacteria and archaea for total beta diversity and species turnover, which is largely underlain by equivalent processes such as environmental selection. For both microbial taxa, total beta diversity and species turnover were primarily constrained by metal oxide-bound inorganic P (NaOH-Pi) and sediment total phosphorus (STP) in Hongfeng Lake, while largely affected by reductant-soluble total P or calcium-bound inorganic P in Aha Lake. Moreover, NaOH-Pi and STP could influence bacterial total beta diversity by driving species nestedness in Hongfeng Lake. The joint effects of organic P (Po), inorganic P (Pi) and total P fractions indicated that P fractions are important to bacterial and archaeal beta diversity. Compared to Po fractions, Pi fractions had greater pure effects on bacterial beta diversity. Intriguingly, for total beta diversity and species turnover, archaea rather than bacteria are well-explained by Po fractions in both lakes, implying that the archaeal community may be involved in Po mineralization. Overall, our study reveals the importance of P fractions to the mechanism underlying bacterial and archaeal beta diversity in sediments, and provides theoretical underpinnings for controlling P sources in biodiversity conservation.

Unveiling the ecological significance of phosphorus fractions in shaping bacterial and archaeal beta diversity in mesotrophic lakes

By using GC/MS method,this paper analyzed the vertical profiles of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) proposed by US EPA in a sediment core collected from the Hongfeng Lake in Southwest ChinaMeanwhile,the composition characteristics of the PAHs,their possible sources,and their ecological risks were discussedThe total PAHs concentrations in the sediment core ranged from 848 to 3725 ng·g-1,with a peak in the mid-1990sThe vertical profiles of the PAHs were not only different from those in developed countries,but also different from those in the coastline and other regions lakes in ChinaThe PAHs in Hongfeng Lake were mainly come from the low temperature combustion of domestic coal and biomass burningHowever,the relative abundance of the PAHs from high temperature combustion processes,such as the combustion of industrial coal and vehicle emission,was increased significantly in recent yearsThe risk assessment suggested that the low rings PAHs such as NAP,FLU,and PHEN in the sediment of Hongfeng Lake could induce potential ecological risksHowever,from the viewpoint of toxic equivalency quotient,the ecological risks were mainly originated from the high rings PAHs such as BbF,BaP,and DBA

High-resolution sedimentary records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Hongfeng Lake of Southwest China

Toxic cyanobacteria (TCB) are well-known worldwide for their adverse impacts on humans. Species compositions and seasonal variations of TCB in reservoirs depend on interactions between physical and chemical factors. This study was conducted to evaluate the water quality in the Aha Reservoir, Southwest China, focusing on cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins. Water samples were collected weekly or biweekly from May to September of 2015 and used to delineate temporal variations in density and distribution of toxic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the reservoir. Toxic cyanobacteria identified consisted of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Pseudanabaena limnetica, Cylindrospermopsis sp., and Microcystis sp., with Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Pseudanabaena limnetica being the most common and significant toxic genera. The total biomass of cyanobacteria was 17.0 mg/L. Identification and quantification of microcystin variants were conducted by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a system equipped with a photodiode array detector. Microcystin levels were between 0-3.0 μg/L, MC-RR was around 0-3.0 μg/L and MC-LR was approximately 0-0.9 μg/L. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the investigated reservoirs should be monitored regularly to minimize potential health risks to the human population.
