The Role of Procalcitonin in Febrile Neutropenic Patients: Review of the Literature
TL;DR: PCT seems to be able to discriminate fever due to systemic forms of infection from non-infectious etiologies and may be useful in outcome prediction in patients with febrile neutropenia but is not superior to interleukin-6 or C-reactive protein concentrations for this purpose.
Effects of a predominantly hydroxyethyl starch (HES)-based and a predominantly non HES-based fluid therapy on renal function in surgical ICU patients
Franziska Schabinski,Janaina Oishi,Fabio Tuche,Alain Luy,Yasser Sakr,Donald L. Bredle,Christiane S. Hartog,Konrad Reinhart +7 more
TL;DR: The incidence of ARF was similar in patients who received predominantly HES (6% 130/.04) fluid therapy and in those who received mainly gelatin 4%-based fluid therapy, suggesting moderate cumulative doses of modern HES or gelatin solutions may be associated with a higher risk of ARf.

Álvaro Réa-Neto,Nazah Cherif Mohamad Youssef,Fabio Tuche,F. M. Brunkhorst,V. Marco Ranieri,Konrad Reinhart,Yasser Sakr +6 more
TL;DR: An integrated approach should be followed in diagnosing and treating patients with VAP, including early antibiotic therapy and subsequent rectification according to clinical response and results of bacteriologic cultures.
