Experimental and theoretical model study on the dynamic mechanical behavior of sintered NdFeB

Despite the fact that high-temperature superconductors have been known for more than 30 years, these materials are still intensively studied due to their unique transport and magnetic properties. High-temperature superconducting mixed oxides (YBCO, REBCO, BSSCO, etc.) belong to a group of advanced ceramic materials with a layered structure, heading now towards their applications in various fields of engineering, energetics or industry. The improvement of their properties, mainly the critical current density in a high magnetic field, and thus a high trapped magnetic field, is therefore highly desirable. One of the possible routes for such improvement is implementation of artificial pinning centres in the superconducting single-domain matrix. In this review, we describe the use of various pinning centres and possible methods of their application. In addition, their advantages and disadvantages are summarized and discussed. The main focus is on nanosized pinning centres composed of chemically inert materials and on the bulk type of YBCO/REBCO superconductors used mainly for various superconducting magnetic levitation applications.

Microscale and nanoscale pinning centres in single-domain REBCO superconductors

In this paper, we investigated the two fabrication processes of single-domain GdBCO bulk superconductors with new solid phase sources (NSPs) and conventional solid phase sources (CSPs) by the modified top-seeded infiltration and growth (TSIG) technique. The CSPs is Gd2BaCuO5 powder, and the NSPs is made of a mixture of powders of Gd2O3 and BaCuO2. The reaction of the solid phase, morphology, microstructure and superconducting properties of the GdBCO samples were investigated. The properties of the sample with the NSPs have been improved compared with those of the sample fabricated by the CSPs. It is found that the improvement method cannot only increase the stability of the sample to complete the growth of the whole bulk during the TSIG process at a high temperature but also economize the raw material and experimental time. The results are helpful to us for the fabrication of large-grain single-domain GdBCO bulk superconductors using the improvement process method.

Comparison of the superconducting properties in GdBCO bulk superconductors fabricated with two different solid phases

A new solid source was prepared and used to fabricate large size GdBCO single domain superconductor by top-seeded infiltration and growth (TSIG) process. The morphology, microstructure, and superconductivity properties of the GdBCO sample were investigated. It is found that the proposed solid source can be used to fabricate a well textured GdBCO single domain, and also reduce the fabrication cost and improve working efficiency. The results are helpful to fabricate high quality and large size single domain GdBCO bulk superconductors.

Fabrication method of large size single domain GdBCO bulk superconductor using a new solid source

A small superconducting maglev propeller system, a small spacecraft model suspending and moving around a terrestrial globe, several small maglev vehicle models and a magnetic circuit converter have been designed and constructed. The track was paved by NdFeB magnets, the arrangement of the magnets made us easy to get a uniform distribution of magnetic field along the length direction of the track and a high magnetic field gradient in the lateral direction. When the YBCO bulks mounted inside the vehicle models or spacecraft model was field cooled to LN 2 temperature at a certain distance away from the track, they could be automatically floating over and moving along the track without any obvious friction. The models can be used as experimental or demonstration devices for the magnetic levitation applications.

Magnetic levitation and its application for education devices based on YBCO bulk superconductors

Single domain GdBCO bulk superconductors have been fabricated with different new kinds of liquid sources by Top Seeded Infiltration and Growth process. A conventional liquid source is a mixture of REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− x and Ba 3 Cu 5 O 8 in a ratio of 1:1; new liquid sources are made of a mixture of RE 2 BaCuO 5  + 9BaCuO 2  + 6CuO or RE 2 O 3  + 10BaCuO 2  + 6CuO. The microstructure s and levitation forces of the GdBCO bulks have also been investigated. The properties of the samples fabricated are nearly the same as those of samples fabricated with conventional liquid sources, which indicates that the new liquid sources are very important to reduce the cost and improve the working efficient on the fabrication of single-domain GdBCO bulk superconductors.

Fabrication of single domain GdBCO bulks with different new kind of liquid sources by TSIG technique

Single domain YBCO bulk superconductors, with different Y 2 Ba 4 CuWO y (YW2411) additions, have been fabricated by top seeded infiltration and growth technique (TSIG). The solid phase pellet is made of a mixture of Y 2 BaCuO 5 (Y211) +  x  wt% YW2411 powders, x  = 0, 5, 10, 15. The growth morphology, microstructure and levitation force of the YBCO bulks have been investigated. It is found that the levitation force increased from 23 N to 33.6 N and then reduced to 20 N as YW2411 addition from 0 to 5 wt% and 15 wt%, the largest levitation force is obtained when the YW2411 content is about 5 wt%. This is closely related with the microstructure of the samples with different Y 2 Ba 4 CuWO y (YW2411) additions, which is very helpful for us to fabricate high quality YBCO bulk superconductors.
