Turbulent dispersed multiphase flows are common in many engineering and environmental applications. The stochastic nature of both the carrier-phase turbulence and the dispersed-phase distribution makes the problem of turbulent dispersed multiphase flow far more complex than its single-phase counterpart. In this article we first review the current state-of-the-art experimental and computational techniques for turbulent dispersed multiphase flows, their strengths and limitations, and opportunities for the future. The review then focuses on three important aspects of turbulent dispersed multiphase flows: the preferential concentration of particles, droplets, and bubbles; the effect of turbulence on the coupling between the dispersed and carrier phases; and modulation of carrier-phase turbulence due to the presence of particles and bubbles.

Preferential concentration of particles by turbulence

Numerical models for turbulent fluid-particle flows are reviewed. The two approaches typically used for modelling the dispersed (particle) phase are the trajectory and two-fluid formulations, while volume- averaged models are most common for the continuous (fluid) phase. The review is structured according to the turbulence models used for the continuous phase: turbulence energy-dissipation models, large- eddy simulations, direct numerical simulations, and discrete vortex models. The applications of these models to simulate particle dispersion due to fluid turbulence and the adjustments to the models to account for the modulation of the carrier phase turbulence by the particles are addressed.

Numerical models for two-phase turbulent flows

An investigation of the instantaneous particle concentration at the centerline of a turbulent channel flow has been conducted. The concentration field was obtained by digitizing photographs of particles illuminated by a spanwise laser sheet and identifying individual particles. The resulting distribution was then compared to the expected distribution for the same number of particles randomly distributed throughout the volume. Significant departures from randomness have been found and the differences are strongly dependent on the time constants of the particles. Five different particle classes were investigated and the maximum departure from randomness was found when the ratio of the particle’s aerodynamic response time to the Kolmogorov time scale of the flow was approximately one. The length scales of the particle clusters were found to change with the particle size. The correlation dimension was used to produce a single parameter describing the degree of concentration regardless of the scale on which it occurs. The spacing between particle clusters was also investigated and found to be much larger than the scales on which concentration occurs.

The dispersion of particles in a plane mixing layer between two air streams is investigated using experimental and numerical techniques. The results show that large-scale spanwise vortices strongly influence the particle dispersion process. Particles with aerodynamic response times on the order of the large scale vortex time scales are found to concentrate near the outer edges of the vortex structures. Time average velocity measurements also demonstrate that these particles tend to move away from the center of the mixing layer
