Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has emerged in the past ten years as a promising technique for analysis and characterization of the composition of a broad variety of objects of cultural heritage including painted artworks, icons, polychromes, pottery, sculpture, and metal, glass, and stone artifacts. This article describes in brief the basic principles and technological aspects of LIBS, and reviews several test cases that demonstrate the applicability and prospects of LIBS in the field of archaeological science.

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy methods and applications: A comprehensive review

A historical self-portrait painted by Sir Arthur Streeton (1867-1943) has been studied with fast-scanning X-ray fluorescence microscopy using synchrotron radiation. One of the technique's unique strengths is the ability to reveal metal distributions in the pigments of underlying brushstrokes, thus providing information critical to the interpretation of a painting. We have applied the nondestructive technique with the event-mode Maia X-ray detector, which has the capability to record elemental maps at megapixels per hour with the full X-ray fluorescence spectrum collected per pixel. The painting poses a difficult challenge to conventional X-ray analysis, because it was completely obscured with heavy brushstrokes of highly X-ray absorptive lead white paint (2PbCO(3)·Pb(OH)(2)) by the artist, making it an excellent candidate for the application of the synchrotron-based technique. The 25 megapixel elemental maps were successfully observed through the lead white paint across the 200 × 300 mm(2) scan area. The sweeping brushstrokes of the lead white overpaint contributed significant detrimental structure to the elemental maps. A corrective procedure was devised to enhance the visualization of the elemental maps by using the elastic X-ray scatter as a proxy for the lead white overpaint. We foresee the technique applied to the most demanding of culturally significant artworks where conventional analytical methods are inadequate.

The various application possibilities of microscopic x-ray fluorescence and associated methods for the characterization and provenance analysis of objects and materials of cultural heritage value are discussed by means of a number of case studies. They include the trace analysis of historic glass, the analysis of corroded coins and statues in bronze and silver and the study of inks on historical documents. These studies are conducted by means of micro-XRF instruments installed at synchrotron beamlines and by means of laboratory equipment, some of which is easily transportable to the museum or archaeological site where the objects of interest are located. Use of microscopic XRF for non‐destructive analysis in art and archaeometry

Trace-level micro-XANES by means of bending magnets radiation focused with a polycapillary lens

In this study a monolithic polycapillary half-lens was evaluated as a micro-focusing device for monochromatic synchrotron radiation. The tested optic produced an X-ray micro-beam of 37–53 microns in the energy range of 6–19 keV with a maximum intensity gain of about 600 with respect to the primary beam. When applied to X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, absolute detection limits in the range of 0.06–1 pg were measured, coupled with relative detection limits of 0.3–200 ppm for the atomic number range of 20–40. The use of the polycapillary lens was demonstrated by performing microscopic X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements in fluorescence mode on transition metals (concentration range 40–100 ppm) in fly ash particles.
