Acoustic vibrations of metal nano-objects: Time-domain investigations

The impact of spherical symmetry breaking and crystallinity on the response of the vibrational acoustic modes of a nanoobject in frequency- and time-domain experiments is investigated using the finite-element analysis method. The results show that introduction of shape anisotropy, i.e., evolution from a nanosphere to a nanorod, modifies the periods of the fundamental radial and quadrupolar modes and leads to activation of a quadrupolar-like mode in time-domain studies. In contrast, crystallinity is shown to have a negligible impact on the breathing mode frequency of a nanosphere formed by a cubic crystal and does not activate any quadrupolar mode. The effect of an anisotropic excitation in time-resolved measurements of a large nanosphere is also discussed.

Anisotropy effects on the time-resolved spectroscopy of the acoustic vibrations of nanoobjects

A new method for synthesizing aluminum nanorods has been developed and demonstrated using nonaqueous, ionic liquid electrodeposition in nanoporous, polycarbonate templates. The nanorods, which have diameters of 40 and 60 nm and lengths of 2−4 μm, are characterized by SEM, EDX, UV−visible, and ultrafast spectroscopy.

The strong interaction of metal nanoparticles with light makes it possible to detect individual particles by far-field optical methods. In this article, the interaction of a metal nanoparticle with a short laser pulse is discussed, with the emphasis on the coherent excitation of mechanical (acoustic) modes and the optical detection of these vibrations. The literature on acoustic vibrations of single metal nanoparticles of different shapes (spheres, dumbbells, rods, cubes, wires, prisms) is reviewed, and the modes that have been excited and detected in these particles are discussed. Finally, the insights and potential applications enabled by these studies are summarized.

Probing the acoustic vibrations of single metal nanoparticles by ultrashort laser pulses

Using ultrafast spectroscopy, we investigated electron–lattice coupling and acoustic vibrations in self-assembled silver nanocolumns embedded in an amorphous Al2O3 matrix. The measured electron–lattice energy exchange time is smaller in the nanocolumns than in bulk silver, with a value very close to that of isolated nanospheres with comparable surface to volume ratio. Two vibration modes were detected and ascribed to the breathing and extensional mode of the nanocolumns, in agreement with numerical simulations.
