In order to evaluate embryo production in Morada Nova (white variety) ewes superovulated with porcine follicle-stimulating hormone, 20 cycling ewes were used as embryo donors and allocated into two groups according to age: group 1 (ewes aged 1–2 years; n = 9) or group 2 (ewes aged 3–4 years; n = 11). Embryo recovery was performed by laparotomy 5–6 days after oestrus. The evaluation of embryos was made under stereomicroscope according to International Embryo Transfer Society rules. The overall recovery rate was 64.6% (5.0 ± 0.7 structures per ewe) and 86.3% of the recovered structures were fertilized. Group 1 was superior (p < 0.05) to group 2 according to recovered (6.6 ± 0.9 vs 3.6 ± 0.8) and fertilized structures (5.6 ± 1.1 vs. 3.5 ± 0.7) per ewe. In conclusion, the ovarian response and the embryo production in Morada Nova (white variety) sheep subjected to a standard superovulation treatment were considered satisfactory. In addition, the use of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer in younger ewes (≤ 2 years old) of this sheep breed appears to be an efficient tool to accelerate the preservation of the Morada Nova (white variety) breed, since younger ewes are as responsive as older ones.

Effect of age of donor on embryo production in Morada Nova (white variety) ewes participating in a conservation programme in Brazil.

The effectiveness of FSH (Folltropin-V) in two different doses (80 mg and 100 mg) with or without use of hCG was assessed on achieving superovulation and embryo production in sheep under sub-tropical climate of India. During the breeding season, 39 crossbred ewes were synchronized using progesterone impregnated intravaginal sponges kept in situ for 12 days. Superovulation treatment was given in two groups (80 mg FSH and 100 mg FSH) in six tapering dose schedule. Each group was subdivided in two groups, without hCG treatment or with hCG treatment 24hrs after removal of progesterone implant, thus making four treatment groups. The ewes were observed for estrus every 4h, on the 5th day following estrus ovarian response was evaluated using rigid laparoscope and ewes showing superovulation response were subjected to embryo collection using retrograde flushing of uterine horns after catheterization of the fimbriated end of the fallopian tube. No differences were found among the treatment groups in incidence of estrus and percentage of ewes showing superovulatory response. Treatment with hCG improved percent ovulation and fertilization percentage in superovulating ewes at higher dose of FSH (100 mg). Although additional treatment with hCG improved total ovarian response and percent ovulations, the mean number of viable embryos and number of unfertilized ova remained statistically unaffected. It is concluded that the FSH (folltropin-V) at 80 mg in six reducing dose schedule is suitable and economical for superovulation in ewes.

RESUMEN La superovulacion permite aumentar la tasa de mejoramiento genetico a traves de las hembras. En ovinos, la raza Corriedale de doble proposito (lana, carne) es numericamente importante en Argentina, donde se distribuye en toda su superficie y es criada bajo condiciones extensivas. Sin embargo, la informacion sobre la respuesta superovulatoria en ovejas Corriedale es escasa y no se han realizado estudios para el desarrollo de protocolos sencillos de estimulacion apropiados para estos rebanos extensivos. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la viabilidad de simplificar los tratamientos superovulatorios en ovejas de la raza Corriedale durante la estacion de cria. Se realizaron dos experimentos, utilizandose ovejas Corriedale dentro de la estacion reproductiva del otono. Las ovejas fueron sincronizadas con esponjas intravaginales con progestageno y superovuladas segun diferentes tratamientos. En el Experimento 1, se evaluaron protocolos simplificados de administracion de FSH ovina (FSHo) en combinacion o no con eCG: A1 (n=13): 176 unidades FSHo en una unica inyeccion en vehiculo salino junto con 500 UI eCG aplicadas 48 h antes de la retirada de las esponjas (PRE-RE); B1 (n=12): 176 unidades FSHo repartidas en 4 dosis iguales en vehiculo salino cada 12 h comenzando 24 h PRE-RE; C1 (n=13): 176 unidades FSHo en una unica inyeccion en vehiculo retardante (polivinilpirrolidona; PVP) 24 h PRE-RE; D1 (n=14): 176 unidades FSHo repartidas en 6 dosis iguales en vehiculo salino cada 12 h comenzando 48 h PRE-RE; E1 (n=7): 132 unidades FSHo repartidas en 4 dosis iguales en salino cada 12 h comenzando 24 h PRE-RE y asociadas a 500 UI eCG junto con la primera inyeccion; F1 (n=7): 132 unidades FSHo en una unica inyeccion en PVP junto con 500 UI eCG, 24 h PRE-RE.
