We present a catalogue of low-mass X-ray binaries. The catalogue is an updated version of the catalogue of van Paradijs (1995). This new catalogue contains 150 sources, 31 new low-mass X-ray binaries in addition to the 119 sources listed in van Paradijs' catalogue. The aim of this catalogue is to help the reader gain easy access to the recent literature (up to about August 2000) on individual sources, and to provide of some basic information on the X-ray sources and their counterparts in other wavelength ranges (UV, optical, IR, and radio). In cases where there is some doubt about the low-mass nature of the X-ray binary, this is mentioned. In an appendix we list the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs), which nowadays are no longer thought to be low-mass X-ray binaries.

A catalogue of low-mass X-ray binaries

We present the first detection of the mass donor star in the prototype X-ray binary Scorpius X-1 Phase-resolved spectroscopy revealed narrow emission line components from the irradiated secondary star Radial velocity fits to the Bowen blend emission are used to establish an absolute orbital ephemeris and derive an accurate value for the systemic velocity, γ = -1138 ± 06 km s-1 Emission from the irradiated front side of the secondary leads to solid limits to the radial velocity of the mass donor of 87 K2 148 km s-1 In conjunction with an upper limit to the velocity of the primary K1 ≤ 53 km s-1, we derive a firm limit on the mass ratio of Sco X-1 of q 061 A likely set of system parameters satisfying the various constraints as well as the recent inclination estimate by Fomalont, Geldzahler, & Bradshaw (2001) is K1 = 40 km s-1, K2 = 133 km s-1, q = 030 corresponding to component masses of M1 = 14 M☉ and M2 = 042 M☉ for an orbital inclination of 38°

The Mass Donor of Scorpius X-1 Revealed

The results of extensive electronic structure calculations performed for a series of molecules: (CC)nH, H(CC)nH+ for n=2,3,4 and for (CC)3H− and H(CC)3H− are presented. The theoretical scheme is based on the complete‐active‐space self‐consistent‐field (CASSCF) method, with remaining dynamic electron correlation effects added in the subsequent step with the use of the second‐order perturbation theory with the CASSCF wave function as the reference state (CASPT2). The results support the hypothesis of Fulara et al. [Nature 336, 439 (1993)] that the 2Π→2Π electronic transitions in the series of CnH radicals might be responsible for some of the ‘‘diffuse interstellar bands’’ observed in the visible and near‐infrared spectra of stars located on the far side of diffuse interstellar clouds.

Ab initio characterization of electronically excited states in highly unsaturated hydrocarbons

The quantitative study of the interstellar medium (ISM) began with Hartman’s detection in 1904 of the resonance lines of Ca and K, seen in absorption against bright stars by intervening diffuse clouds. Other atoms (Na,Fe,Ti) were subsequently detected, although the overwhelming abundance of H was not recognized until the 1930s. In 1934 came the first discovery that was to suggest the possibility of interstellar molecules—the detection of four diffuse interstellar bands in the visible. Although these bands (now numbering three dozen) have never been identified, Russell in 1935 suggested that they were molecular in nature. In 1937 Swings proposed that the diffuse bands were C02 bands, and the same year Swings and Rosenfeld stressed the possibility of interstellar CH, OH, NH, CN, and C2. In the years 1937 to 1941, the first discoveries of interstellar molecules were made at Mt. Wilson, of CH+, CH, and CN by means of their optical absorption spectra in the 4230-4300-A region (e.g., Adams 1941). However, the possibility of a rich chemistry in the ISM, as suggested by such detections, remained unrecognized at the time. Indeed, despite an extensive study by Adams (1949) of the optical spectra of these molecules towards many stars, there remained doubt as to whether these lines were interstellar or circumstellar. The 1951 work by Bates and Spitzer which concluded that the formation of even simple (diatomic) molecules in space was slow and that destruction processes by UV radiation were rapid further cast doubt on the notion of interstellar molecules, although the only formation mechanism considered was radiative association.

Interstellar Molecules and Astrochemistry

We study relations between the X-ray luminosity, orbital period and absolute near-infrared magnitude of persistent low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We show that often optical and near-infrared spectral energy distribution of LMXBs can be adequately described by a simple model of an accretion disc and a secondary star reprocessing X-ray emission of a central compact object. This gives us an evidence that using an X-ray luminosity and an absolute infrared magnitude of a persistent LMXB one can make reliable estimate of its orbital period. Using a sample of well-known LMXBs, we have constructed a correlation of L_X, P_orb and M_K values which can be approximated by a straight line with the RMS scatter at the level of ~0.3 mag. Such a correlation, being to some extent an analogous to the correlation, found by van Paradijs & McClintock 1994, might be helpful for future population studies especially in the light of forthcoming surveys of the Galaxy in X-ray and infrared spectral domains.

Period--luminosity relation for persistent LMXBs in the near-infrared

New diffuse interstellar bands in the wavelength region 6500 - 8900 Å.

The results of a campaign of monitoring HZ Her with the IUE satellite are presented. The spectrum and light variation outside of eclipse are consistent with the Milgrom and Salpeter model for emission from the X-ray heated photosphere of the primary. Near eclipse there is UV flux in excess of the prediction of the heated photosphere model, which shows significant 35 day variations and is consistent with an origin in a precessing disk, as described by Gerend and Boynton. The spectrum shows the strong emission lines of N V and C IV, which generally vary in the sense of the continuum. The N V/C IV ratio is greater than 2 near orbital phase 0.5 and approaches unity near eclipse. It is suggested that these emission lines are optically thick and arise from both the heated photosphere and the accretion disk.
