Michels et al. (1982) observed the apparent impacting of the sun by a comet, and Sekanina (1982) showed that the comet, 1979XI, was probably a member of the Kreutz group of sun-grazing comets, although its perihelion of 0.35 solar radii was much smaller than the 1.2-1.9 solar radii common for this comet class. The perihelion change cannot be explained by planetary, stellar, or nongravitational perturbations. The most plausible explanation is collision with another body, probably a comet, at large heliocentric distance. The probability of such an event is, however, extremely small. The sublimation of the comet's nucleus before impact is discussed, and it is suggested that its ultimate destruction probably resulted from the shock of entry into the denser regions of the solar atmosphere, just above the photosphere.

Cometary Impacts with the Sun: Physical and Dynamical Considerations.

Physical-mechanical properties of cometary nuclei matter are described in detail. As compared to other Solar System bodies, cometary nuclei are characterized by low strength properties. The ultimate tensile strength of cometary matter and cometary nuclei on the whole is about 2 kPa. An analysis performed based on a rheological model of a self-gravitating triaxial solid body showed that cometary nuclei less than 50-60 km (this actually being all known comets) are characterized by a constant ultimate tensile strength which is determined only by the matter composition and structure. The effective ultimate tensile strength for bodies larger than 50-60 km is determined by the body mass and figure parameters and increases according to the quadratic law depending on the body dimensions and mass. Such an increase of the effective strength can explain the absence or deficit of cometary nuclei more than 60 km in size, since it can significantly affect the parameters of the parent body destruction and the formation of a secondary population. The dependence of the mechanism and character of destruction on the parameters of the figure for Kuiper objects more than 50-60 km is size can yield a deficit of the population of the bodies whose figure parameters are a/c > 1.75 with respect to the bodies with a/c < 1.75 figure parameters.

Physical-Mechanical Properties of a Cometary Nucleus

Abstract Passages of comet-like bodies through the atmosphere/chromosphere of massive stars at velocities more than 600 km/s will be accompanied, due to aerodynamic effects as crushing and flattening, by impulse generation of hot plasma within a relatively very thin layer near the stellar surface/photosphere as well as “blast” shock wave, i.e., impact-generated photospheric stellar/solar flares. Observational manifestations of such high-temperature phenomena will be eruption of the explosive layer's hot plasma, on materials of the star and “exploding” comet nuclei, into the circumstellar environment and variable anomalies in chemical abundances of metal atoms/ions like Fe, Si etc. Interferometric and spectroscopic observations/monitoring of young massive stars with dense protoplanetary discs are of interest for massive stars physics/evolution, including identification of mechanisms for massive stars variability.

Massive stars: flare activity due to infalls of comet-like bodies

Solar and stellar flares due to impacts of comet nuclei and falling evaporating bodies, FEBs, with the Sun/stars are analytically considered. It is shown that impacts of sun/stargrazing comets will be accompanied by essential aerodynamic effects: nuclei crushing and expansion/ flattening of crushed mass within the chromosphere. These processes lead to impulse generation of a hot plasma, strong shock wave in the thin layer near photosphere, eruption of the hot ionized clump to the lower corona, i.e., impact-induced solar/stellar flares.
