Based on distinctive morphological and vocal characters we describe a new species of lowland tailorbird Orthotomus from dense humid lowland scrub in the floodplain of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers of Cambodia. Genetic data place it in the O. atrogularis–O. ruficeps –O. sepium clade. All data suggest that the new species is most closely related to O. atrogularis, from which genetic differences are apparently of a level usually associated with subspecies. However the two taxa behave as biological species, existing locally in sympatry and even exceptionally in syntopy, without apparent hybridisation. The species is known so far from a small area within which its habitat is declining in area and quality. However, although birds are found in a number of small habitat fragments (including within the city limits of Phnom Penh), most individuals probably occupy one large contiguous area of habitat in the Tonle Sap floodplain. We therefore recommend it is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. The new species is abundant in suitable habitat within its small range. Further work is required to understand more clearly the distribution and ecology of this species and in particular its evolutionary relationship with O. atrogularis.

The Philippine Islands are one of the most biologically diverse archipelagoes in the world. Current taxonomy, however, may underestimate levels of avian diversity and endemism in these islands. Although species limits can be difficult to determine among allopatric populations, quantitative methods for comparing phenotypic and genotypic data can provide useful metrics of divergence among populations and identify those that merit consideration for elevation to full species status. Using a conceptual approach that integrates genetic and phenotypic data, we compared populations among 48 species, estimating genetic divergence (p-distance) using the mtDNA marker ND2 and comparing plumage and morphometrics of museum study skins. Using conservative speciation thresholds, pairwise comparisons of genetic and phenotypic divergence suggested possible species-level divergences in more than half of the species studied (25 out of 48). In speciation process space, divergence routes were heterogeneous among taxa. Nearly all populations that surpassed high genotypic divergence thresholds were Passeriformes, and non-Passeriformes populations surpassed high phenotypic divergence thresholds more commonly than expected by chance. Overall, there was an apparent logarithmic increase in phenotypic divergence with respect to genetic divergence, suggesting the possibility that divergence among these lineages may initially be driven by divergent selection in this allopatric system. Also, genetic endemism was high among sampled islands. Higher taxonomy affected divergence in genotype and phenotype. Although broader lineage, genetic, phenotypic, and numeric sampling is needed to further explore heterogeneity among divergence processes and to accurately assess species-level diversity in these taxa, our results support the need for substantial taxonomic revisions among Philippine birds. The conservation implications are profound.

We show, based on morphology and especially vocalisations, that the Philippine Hawk Owl Ninox philippensis requires treatment as seven allopatric species and at least one additional subspecies. Morphological distinctions between three groups of taxa are striking, and although taxa within one major group are relatively similar in plumage they vary rather consistently in size and proportions. It has not been possible until now to resolve the species limits in this complex due mainly to the lack of sound recordings of key taxa, a problem now rectified. Vocalisations differ significantly between all seven species, the limits of which are incongruent with all previous taxonomies. Taxa from Mindoro ( mindorensis ), Mindanao ( spilocephala ), Camiguin Sur (named herein), and the Sulu Islands ( reyi ) exhibit especially great vocal differences from all other taxa along with smaller but consistent differences in plumage and morphometrics. Although specimens have been in museum collections for many years, two of these species and one subspecies have heretofore remained undescribed, and we formally name these taxa for science. The recommended species-level treatment and English names of the N. philippensis complex are: Luzon Hawk Owl N. philippensis ; Mindanao Hawk Owl N. spilocephala ; Mindoro Hawk Owl N. mindorensis ; Sulu Hawk Owl Ninox reyi ; Romblon Hawk Owl N. spilonota ; Camiguin Hawk Owl new species; and Cebu Hawk Owl new species.
