Protoplanetary disks with large inner dust cavities are thought to host massive planetary or substellar companions. These disks show asymmetries and rings in the millimeter continuum, caused by dust trapping in pressure bumps, and potentially vortices or horseshoes. The origin of the asymmetries and their diversity remains unclear. We present a comprehensive study of 16 disks for which the gas surface density profile has been constrained by CO isotopologue data. We compare the azimuthal extents of the dust continuum profiles with the local gas surface density in each disk, and find that the asymmetries correspond to higher Stokes numbers or low gas surface density. We discuss which asymmetric structures can be explained by a horseshoe, a vortex or spiral density waves. Second, we reassess the gas gap radii from the $^{13}$CO maps, which are about a factor 2 smaller than the dust ring radii, suggesting that companions in these disks are in the brown dwarf mass regime ($\sim 15-50 M_{\rm Jup}$) or in the Super-Jovian mass regime ($\sim 3-15 M_{\rm Jup}$) on eccentric orbits. This is consistent with the estimates from contrast curves on companion mass limits. These curves rule out (sub)stellar companions ($q>$0.05) for the majority of the sample at the gap location, but it remains possible at even smaller radii. Third, we find that spiral arms in scattered light images are primarily detected around high luminosity stars with disks with wide gaps, which can be understood by the dependence of the spiral arm pitch angle on disk temperature and companion mass.

On the diversity of asymmetries in gapped protoplanetary disks

Radial Variations in Grain Sizes and Dust Scale Heights in the Protoplanetary Disk around HD 163296 Revealed by ALMA Polarization Observations

The HD 163296 disk shows ring and gap substructures with ALMA observations. In addition, this is the only disk where the rings and gaps are spatially resolved in millimeter-wave polarization measurements. In this paper, we conduct radiative transfer modeling that includes self-scattering polarization to constrain the grain size and its distribution. We found that the grain size and dust scale height are the key parameters for reproducing the radial and azimuthal distributions of the observed polarization signature. Radial variation is mainly determined by grain size. The polarization fraction is high if the particle size is $\sim \lambda/2\pi$; it is low if the particle size is larger or smaller than this. In contrast, azimuthal variation in polarization is enhanced if the dust scale height is increased. Based on detailed modeling of the HD 163296 polarization, we found the following radial variations in the grain size and dust scale height. The maximum grain size was 140 microns in the gaps and significantly larger or smaller in the rings. The dust scale height is less than one-third the gas scale height inside the 70 au ring, and two-thirds the gas scale height outside the 70 au ring. Furthermore, we constrained the gas turbulence to be $\alpha\lesssim1.5\times10^{-3}$ in the 50 au gap and $\alpha\sim 0.015-0.3$ in the 90 au gap. The transition of the turbulence strength at the boundary of the 70 au ring indicates the existence of a dead zone.

Radial variations in grain sizes and dust scale heights in the protoplanetary disk around HD 163296 revealed by ALMA polarization observation

Context. Spatially resolved continuum observations of planet-forming disks show prominent ring and gap structures in their dust distribution. However, the picture from gas observations is much less clear and constraints on the radial gas density structure (i.e. gas gaps) remain rare and uncertain. Aims. We want to investigate the importance of thermo-chemical processes for the interpretation of high-spatial-resolution gas observations of planet-forming disks and their impact on the derived gas properties. Methods. We applied the radiation thermo-chemical disk code PRODIMO (PROtoplanetary DIsk MOdel) to model the dust and gas disk of HD 163296 self-consistently, using the DSHARP (Disk Substructure at High Angular Resolution) gas and dust observations. With this model we investigated the impact of dust gaps and gas gaps on the observables and the derived gas properties, considering chemistry, and heating and cooling processes. Results. We find distinct peaks in the radial line intensity profiles of the CO line data of HD 163296 at the location of the dust gaps. Our model indicates that those peaks are not only a consequence of a gas temperature increase within the gaps but are mainly caused by the absorption of line emission from the back side of the disk by the dust rings. For two of the three prominent dust gaps in HD 163296, we find that thermo-chemical effects are negligible for deriving density gradients via measurements of the rotation velocity. However, for the gap with the highest dust depletion, the temperature gradient can be dominant and needs to be considered to derive accurate gas density profiles. Conclusions. Self-consistent gas and dust thermo-chemical modelling in combination with high-quality observations of multiple molecules are necessary to accurately derive gas gap depths and shapes. This is crucial to determine the origin of gaps and rings in planet-forming disks and to improve the mass estimates of forming planets if they are the cause of the gap.

Interpreting high spatial resolution line observations of planet-forming disks with gaps and rings : the case of HD 163296

Context. Observations at millimeter wavelengths of bright protoplanetary disks have shown the ubiquitous presence of structures such as rings and spirals in the continuum emission. The derivation of the underlying properties of the emitting material is nontrivial because of the complex radiative processes involved. Aims. In this paper we analyze new observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at high angular resolution corresponding to 5 – 8au to determine the dust spatial distribution and grain properties in the ringed disk of HD 163296. Methods. We ﬁt the spectral energy distribution as a function of the radius at ﬁve wavelengths from 0.9 to 9mm, using a simple power law and a physical model based on an analytic description of radiative transfer that includes isothermal scattering. We considered eight dust populations and compared the models’ performance using Bayesian evidence. Results. Our analysis shows that the moderately high optical depth ( τ >1) at λ ≤ 1 . 3mm in the dust rings artiﬁcially lower the millime- ter spectral index, which should therefore not be considered as a reliable direct proxy of the dust properties and especially the grain size. We ﬁnd that the outer disk is composed of small grains on the order of 200 µ m with no signiﬁcant difference between rings at 66 and 100au and the adjacent gaps, while in the innermost ∼ 30au, larger grains ( ≥ mm) could be present. We show that the assumptions on the dust composition have a strong impact on the derived surface densities and grain size. In particular, increasing the porosity of the grains to 80% results in a total dust mass about ﬁve times higher with respect to grains with 25% porosity. Finally, we ﬁnd that the derived opacities as a function of frequency deviate from a simple power law and that grains with a lower porosity seem to better reproduce the observations of HD 163296. Conclusions. While we do not ﬁnd evidence of differential trapping in the rings of HD 163296, our overall results are consistent with the postulated presence of giant planets affecting the dust temperature structure and surface density, and possibly originating a second-generation dust population of small grains.

Distribution of solids in the rings of the HD 163296 disk: a multiwavelength study

HD163296 is a Herbig Ae/Be star known to host a protoplanetary disk with a ringed structure. To explain the disk features, previous works proposed the presence of planets embedded into the disk. We have observed HD163296 with the near-infrared (NIR) branch of SPHERE composed by IRDIS and IFS with the aim to put tight constraints on the presence of substellar companions around this star. Despite the low rotation of the field of view during our observation we were able to put upper mass limits of few M_Jup around this object. These limits do not allow to give any definitive conclusion about the planets proposed through the disk characteristics. On the other hand, our results seem to exclude the presence of the only candidate proposed until now using direct imaging in the NIR even if some caution has to be taken considered the different wavelength bands of the two observations.
