Spectral characteristics of Pr3+-doped lead based phosphate glasses for optical display device applications

Undoped and CuO-doped lithium phosphate, lead phosphate and zinc phosphate glasses were prepared. UV–visible and infrared absorption spectra of the prepared samples were measured before and after successive gamma irradiation. Experimental optical spectra of the undoped samples reveal strong UV absorption bands, which are attributed to the presence of trace iron impurities in both the lithium and zinc phosphate glasses while the lead phosphate glass exhibits broad UV bands due to combined absorption of trace iron impurities and divalent lead ions. The CuO-doped glasses reveal an extra broad visible band due to Cu 2+ ions in octahedral coordination. The effects of gamma irradiation have been analyzed for both the sharing of all constituent components including trace iron impurities. Infrared absorption spectra of the prepared samples were investigated by the KBr disk technique. The FTIR spectra reveal main characteristic absorption bands due to different phosphate groups. The IR spectra are observed to be slightly affected by the increase of CuO in the doping level (0.2–3%) indicating the stability of the main network units.

UV–visible and infrared absorption spectra of gamma irradiated CuO-doped lithium phosphate, lead phosphate and zinc phosphate glasses: A comparative study

Highly crystallinity transparent glass-ceramics based on MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-P2O5 system have been prepared by conventional melt-quenching and “two-step” crystallization method. The crystallization kinetics, phase evolution, structure, physical and light transmittance properties of glass-ceramics were studied. The results reveal that the crystallization mechanism of this glass is believed to be three-dimensional interfacial growth. The predominant crystalline phase is Mg2Al4Si5O18 in these glass-ceramics, and the content of crystalline phase becomes higher with rising of crystallization temperature and time, which the light transmittance of glass-ceramics decreases. It is observed that the main elements are uniformly distributed in glass-ceramics from EDS element distribution maps. All things considered, the optimal heat treatment schedule of parent glass is 840 °C/36 h + 1050 °C/3 h, the prepared glass-ceramics possesses high crystallinity (90.5 vol%), good light transmittance (85%) and excellent mechanical and thermal properties. These findings make this family of transparent glass-ceramics showing potential applications in solid-state optical functional material.

Optical and luminescence properties of Dy3+ ions in phosphate based glasses

Generally, highly crystalline transparent glass-ceramics possess excellent physical and chemical properties compared to organic and other inorganic optical materials. We have successfully prepared highly crystalline transparent glass-ceramics in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system by "extreme-time" nucleation & "finite-time" crystallization processes using P2O5, ZrO2 and TiO2 as multiple nucleating agents. The results revealed that the crystallization of glass is controlled by a three-dimensional interfacial crystal growth process. These glass-ceramics mainly consisted of cordierite crystals with a residual glassy phase, and crystallinity increased with crystallization time, but light transmittance decreased with crystallization time due to enlarged grain sizes. EDS mapping revealed a uniform distribution of elements within the glass-ceramic. In the optimal preparation condition (825 °C/96 h + 990 °C/3 h), these glass-ceramics exhibited a high crystallinity (87.3 vol. %), high transmittance (78%), and excellent mechanical properties. This work provides a roadmap for preparing highly crystalline transparent glass-ceramics for applications in optical engineering.

Abstract Glasses from NaCa fluorophosphate doped with varying MnO 2 dopant (0.25, 0.50, 1.0%) and melted under different conditions were prepared by normal melting annealing technique. Collective optical, FTIR, photoluminescence, and E.S.R spectral measurements for the various MnO 2 -doped glasses were done. Optical spectrum of the undoped host fluorophosphate glass reveals only distinct UV absorption which is correlated to contaminated trace iron (Fe 3+ ) ions present as impurities. The MnO 2 -doped glasses show the same UV absorption beside two additional bands, a small one at 410 nm which is assumed to originate from (Mn 2+ ) ions of spin-forbidden nature and a broad visible and distinct band centered at 500 nm representing the absorption of trivalent manganese (Mn 3+ ) ions of spin-allowed nature. The effects of varying melting conditions reveal obvious changes in the intensities of the two visible bands. FTIR spectra reveal extended vibrational peaks due to phosphate (PO 4 ) groups with sharing of some fluorophosphate (PO 3 F) groups and the introduction of increasing percent of the dopant that causes minor variations in the FTIR spectra. Photoluminescence spectra reveal a broad emission band centered at about 635 nm and the intensity of the emission band increases with the increase of MnO 2 content and is more distinct in glass melted under reducing conditions than that melted at normal condition. E.S.R spectral measurements were carried out to confirm the optical results indicating the existence of measurable divalent Mn 2+ ions which increases in reducing conditions. The effects of gamma irradiation (6Mrad dose) on the studied spectral properties were evaluated.

Optical, photoluminescence, and E.S.R spectral analysis of manganese ions in phosphate glasses melted under various conditions and impact of gamma irradiation

Optical and FT Infrared spectroscopic measurements have been utilized to investigate and characterize binary bismuth silicate glass together with derived samples by replacements of parts of the Bi2O3 by SrO, BaO, or PbO. This study aims to justify and compare the spectral and shielding behavior of the studied glasses containing heavy metal ions towards gamma irradiation. The study also aims to measure or calculate the optical energy band gap of these glasses. The replacements of parts of Bi2O3 by SrO, BaO or PbO caused some changes within the optical and infrared absorption spectra due to the different housing positions and physical properties of the respective divalent Sr2+, Ba2+, Pb2+ ions. The stability of both the optical and infrared spectra of the studied bismuth silicate glass and related samples towards gamma irradiation confirm some shielding behavior of the studied glasses and their suitability as radiation shielding candidates.
