This qualitative study examined the meaning of the Holocaust for 10 Israeli families of survivors in which there are three generations. Thirty-two individuals (24 women, 8 men) were asked to tell their “life story.” The interviews were analyzed for themes related to PR (Partial Relevance, Bar-On & Selah, 1991) and the interpersonal values held by family members, using SYMLOG methods (Bales, 1999). The first generation agreed on the importance of the value of family teamwork and showed medium to high range PR scores. The second and the third generations showed low, medium, and high range PR scores and tended to value both family teamwork and more non- conforming behavior.

Facing the Holocaust in Generations of Families of Survivors: The Case of Partial Relevance and Interpersonal Values

The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand and compare two immigrant families whose children perceived their families to be well-functioning, and two families whose children perceived them to be poor-functioning. The method of analysis used for studying the values of the families is based on SYMLOG. Four families, who immigrated to Israel during the early seventies from the former USSR, and whose adolescents were born in Israel, were interviewed. The results show that in the two “well-functioning” families, there is a high degree of consensus on their values — those that they accept, as well as, those that they reject. The two “poor-functioning” families did not exhibit identical value patterns — neither in the values that they favor, nor in those that they reject. In terms of content, in the well-functioning families, there was a strong expression of two values: friendliness and the desirability of self-sacrifice in order to reach family goals. In contrast, in the poor-functioning families, the value of conservatism was salient. Finally, all four families expressed strong opposition to the values of strong individualism and nonconformity. Suggestions for family intervention are offered.

Value Patterns and Content among Families of Soviet Immigrants: SYMLOG Analysis

SYMLOG, an acronym for Systematic Multiple Level Observation of Groups, reflects a technology for the quantification and graphic organization of subjective observational data. The SYMLOG field diagram-a graphic diagram which reflects relational interactions on three dimensions-provides the opportunity to analyze the admixture of therapist family of origin dynamics in conjunction with family relational behaviors. This article presents a sample SYMLOG clinician family of origin evaluation with accompanying elaboration surrounding SYMLOG field theory.

SYMLOG: Clinical technology for therapist family of origin and family system appraisal

The rigorous two-center approach based on the dual-kinetically balanced finite-basis-set expansion is applied to one-electron, heteronuclear diatomic Bi-Au, U-Pb, and Cf-U quasimolecules. The obtained 1σ ground-state energies are compared with previous calculations, when possible. Upon analysis of three different placements of the coordinate system’s origin in the monopole approximation of the two-center potential: (1) in the middle, between the nuclei, (2) in the center of the heavy nucleus, and (3) in the center of the light nucleus, a substantial difference between the results is found. The leading contributions of one-electron quantum electrodynamics (self-energy and vacuum polarization) are evaluated within the monopole approximation as well.

Finite-Basis-Set Approach to the Two-Center Heteronuclear Dirac Problem

The low-energy heavy ion storage ring CRYRING was transported from Stockholm to Darmstadt, modernized and reconfigured, and recommissioned as CRYRING@ESR. The machine is now in operation with all installations in service and is available as a user facility for experiments proposed through the SPARC collaboration. During the 2020–2022 period, we brought a number of experimental installations into service and used them to measure first data: the ultra-cold electron cooler for merged-beam electron–ion collisions, the gas jet target for atomic collisions, a next-generation microcalorimeter-based X-ray spectroscopy setup, and others. Ions can be injected either in low charge states from a local ion source through a 300 keV/u RFQ linac, or in high charge states from the GSI accelerator chain through ESR. This allows for very broad access to ions across the entire periodic table. CRYRING@ESR is able to de- or accelerate ions and cool and store beams of isotopically pure species in a desired charge state. While the analysis is still largely ongoing, the first experimental data already show that the machine reached its expected performance level, and our high expectations regarding achievable resolution in spectroscopy experiments have been fulfilled. With access to new classes of ions available through ESR injection and a new generation of experimental instrumentation, CRYRING@ESR is a unique facility for experiments with heavy, highly charged ions. Here, we will review our present setup and machine performance, discuss the data from our first commissioning experiments and briefly preview the upcoming new installations for the coming years.

First Experiments with CRYRING@ESR

During systemic family therapy of young schizophrenics, changes in social perception and in perceived family environment were investigated. In an exploratory study, SYMLOG adjective ratings were used to obtain data on reciprocalperceptions among family members. A German modification of the Family Environment Scale was used to measure changes in the perception of the shared family situation regarding goals and means. After one year of therapy we found a greater consensus among family members in perceptions of the index patients. However, there were almost no changes in the reciprocal perceptions offathers and mothers or in perceptions of the shared family environment. The importance of consensus on the SYMLOG dimensions for a well-functioning family are discussed in connection with modern social action theory, the concept of perspective taking, and the therapeutic method of circular questioning.
