Many projects concerning the protection, conservation, restoration, and dissemination of cultural heritage are being carried out around the world due to its growing interest as a driving force of socio-economic development. The existence of reliable, digital three-dimensional (3D) models that allow for the planning and management of these projects in a remote and decentralized way is currently a growing necessity. There are many software tools to perform the modeling and complete three-dimensional documentation of the intervened monuments. However, the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector has adopted the Building Information Modeling (BIM) standard over the last few decades due to the progress that has been made in its qualities and capabilities. The complex modeling of cultural heritage through commercial BIM software leads to the consideration of the concept of Heritage BIM (H-BIM), which pursues the modeling of architectural elements, according to artistic, historical, and constructive typologies. In addition, H-BIM is considered to be an emerging technology that enables us to understand, document, advertize, and virtually reconstruct the built heritage. This article is a review of the existing literature on H-BIM and its effective implementation in the cultural heritage sector, exploring the effectiveness and the usefulness of the different methodologies that were developed to model families of elements of interest.

Patterns and trends in Building Information Modeling (BIM) research: A Latent Semantic Analysis

This paper outlines a two stage approach for digitally recording cultural heritage sites. This approach involves a 3D modeling stage and the integration of the 3D model into a 3D GIS for further management and analysis. The modeling stage is carried out using a new concept; Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) which has been developed at the Dublin Institute of Technology [12]. Historic Building Information Modeling is a system for modeling historic structures from laser scan and photogrammetric data using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. The HBIM process involves a reverse engineering solution whereby parametric objects representing architectural elements are mapped onto laser scan or photogrammetric survey data. A library of parametric architectural objects has been designed from historic manuscripts and architectural pattern books. These parametric objects were built using an embedded scripting language within the BIM software called Geometric Descriptive Language (GDL). These objects are combined and mapped onto the survey data to build the entire model. After the 3D model has been created the next stage involves integrating the 3D model into a 3D GIS for further analysis. The international framework for 3D city modeling, CityGML has been adopted for this purpose. CityGML provides an interoperable framework for modeling 3D geometries, semantics, topology and appearance properties [13]. The aim of this research is to bridge the gap between parametric CAD modeling and 3D GIS while using benefits from both systems to help document and analyze cultural heritage sites.

Integration of Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) and 3D GIS for recording and managing cultural heritage sites

Mobile devices provide an increasingly sophisticated support to enhanced experiences and understanding the remote past in an interactive way. The use of augmented reality technologies allows to develop mobile applications for indoor exploration of virtually reconstructed archaeological places. In our work we have built a virtual reconstruction of a Roman Villa with data arising from an urgent partial excavation which were performed in order to build a car parking in the historical city of Valladolid (Spain). In its current state, the archaeological site is covered by an urban garden. Localization and tracking are performed using a combination of GPS and inertial sensors of the mobile device. In this work we prove how to perform an interactive navigation around the 3D virtual model showing an interpretation of the way it was. The user experience is enhanced by answering some simple questions, performing minor tasks and puzzles which are presented with multimedia contents linked to key features of the archaeological site.

La documentacion del patrimonio arquitectonico se ha convertido, en los ultimos anos, en una prioridad para las instituciones encargadas de la gestion y conservacion del patrimonio. Una de las posibles soluciones consiste en utilizar estandares como CityGML para almacenar informacion 3D e informacion semantica relacionada con el patrimonio arquitectonico. Este articulo presenta la metodologia de trabajo que estamos siguiendo en el proyecto ADISPA que consiste en: generar y almacenar la informacion a documentar en CityGML; y analizar las herramientas y estandares para interoperabilidad, compatibilidad e intercambio con el fin de explotar la informacion del modelo de datos en aplicaciones de modelado, anotacion y visualizacion 3D.

A sustainable urban environment requires an integration of documentation and management systems in surveying and planning applications for different kinds of services involving services and processes. Traditional GIS approaches are geo-referenced to 2D information or, more recently, to a virtualized environment arising from the reprojection of textured views on 3D models. In this work, a tool for extracting dominant planes from dense 3D range information is applied for the automatic identification of structural elements (facades, ground and roofs) and their automatic labelling in terms of data of dominant planes. This tool is integrated inside the software platform UvaCad. The constructor of urban geometric primitives is given as a generator of 3D chains corresponding to the grouping of maximal planar quadrilaterals with similar properties for the normal unit vector. As a by-product, one has a semi-automatic volumetric segmentation of small urban environments as support for the development of a Domain Ontology in urban environments. Our methodology is illustrated with some examples corresponding to small villages and typical central squares (Plaza Mayor) of old Spanish cities.
