From Computing Reviews, by Jeanine Meyer The purpose of this paper is to convince the reader of the need for a general model for hypermedia and present the Amsterdam hypermedia model (AHM) as fulfilling that need. Hypertext, which is described by the authors as a 'relatively mature discipline,' has the Dexter model, but the authors show that enhancing that model for hypermedia is not a straightforward task. In particular, it requires attention to issues of synchronization. The AHM model includes attention to timing and composite objects as well as implementation issues such as channels and having the sources of components residing over a distributed system. The paper features one example and also describes an authoring and presentation environment called CMIFed. It is generally well written. The paper can be understood even if one has not studied the Dexter hypertext reference model or the CMIF multimedia document model and, in fact, this paper could serve as an introduction to the issues involved. Too much of the focus, however, is on other systems and not on what AHM actually is. The authors do not demonstrate the model by using it to express the featured example. Moreover, to really merit the term 'model,' AHM should be shown as serving a substantial role in describing and implementing applications in terms of two or more distinct authoring or runtime environments. This is not done, though it appears well within the experience and understanding of the authors.

The Amsterdam hypermedia model: adding time and context to the Dexter model

This paper examines open hypermedia systems and presents the case that such systems provide a step forward for dealing with large, dynamic data sets in distributed, heterogeneous environments by allowing users to access and integrate information and processes in richer and more diverse ways than has previously been possible. In particular, the enhanced Microcosm model for open hypermedia is examined, and the ways in which it provides such an environment are discussed. The paper continues by investigating the advantages and the shortcomings of this model and identifies the areas in which further work must be completed before such systems can become widely adopted, such as the granularity of source and destination anchors, editing and version control. Some attempts to provide solutions to these problems are presented and discussed.

Natalia Stash received her PhD from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), The Netherlands. The title of her thesis is "Incorporating Cognitive/Learning Styles in a General-Purpose Adaptive Hypermedia System". She currently participates in the CHIP project (Cultural Heritage Information Personalization) located at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Her research interests include adaptive web-based systems, semantic web technologies, learning styles, e-culture applications.

Incorporating cognitive/learning styles in a general-purpose adaptive hypermedia system

This paper discusses the architecture and implementation of CMIFed, an editing and presentation environment for hypermedia documents. Typically such documents contain a mixture of text, images, audio, and video (and possibly other media), augmented with user interaction. CMIFed allows the author flexibility in specifying what is presented when, using multiple simultaneous output channels. Unlike systems that use a timeline or scripting metaphor to control the presentation, in CMIFed the user manipulates a collection of events and timing constraints among those events. Common timing requirements can be specified by grouping events together in a tree whose nodes indicate sequential and parallel composition. More general timing constraints between events can be added in the form of synchronization arcs. User interaction is supported in the form of hyperlinks. We place CMIFed in the context of the CMIF model for hypermedia documents, which formalizes the properties of hypermedia presentations in a platform-independent manner. CMIFed: a presentation environment for portable hypermedia documents

We present a model for data organized as graphs. Regular expressions over the types of the node and edge labels
are used to qualify connected subgraphs. An algebraic language based on these regular expressions and supporting
a restricted form of recursion is introduced. A natural application of this model and its query language is hypertext
querying.
