Ultrasonic vibration assisted laser cladding processing was employed to fabricate ceramic particles reinforced Fe-based composite coatings. The influence of the ultrasonic vibration on the dilution, profile appearance, microstructure characteristics, and high temperature oxidation resistance of the composite coatings were investigated. Experimental results revealed that the profile roughness of the coatings was reduced by ultrasonic vibration during laser cladding processing, but the dilution of the coating was slightly increased. The heat and mass transfer in laser molten pool was improved by the ultrasonic vibration, resulting in the refining of the microstructure and increasing the amount of ceramics, as well as homogenizing the distribution of ceramics. The composite coating produced by 300 W ultrasonic vibration assisted laser cladding processing not only possessed good wear resistance, but also had high oxidation resistance. However, excessive ultrasonic vibration power increased the tendency of cracks in the coating.

Microstructure evolution and properties of in-situ ceramic particles reinforced Fe-based composite coating produced by ultrasonic vibration assisted laser cladding processing

A surface worn C-Mn rail is repaired by retrieving the lost part of the railhead using a commercial rutile flux-cored wire submerged arc welding (SAW) method. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Rockwell B hardness test are employed to investigate the properties of the repaired rail specimen. After the first set of analysis, the as-repaired rail is heated up to 1100 °C and water-quenched to room temperature to increase hardness. Each specimen is analytically partitioned into three zones including weld zone (WZ), heat-affected zone (HAZ), and the unaffected rail substrate. The as-repaired rail WZ is primarily composed of pearlite, ferrite, and austenite with a low hardness of 80 HRB, whereas the austenite phase is gone in the as-quenched rail and a massive extent of carbides are precipitated which increased hardness to 95 HRB. The microstructure of the HAZ in the as-repaired sample is a uniform distribution of fine-grained ferrite, pearlite, and carbide with the hardness of 92 HRB, while the microstructure of the identical zone in the as-quenched specimen is mainly martensitic-pearlitic with the highest average hardness among all zones, 110 HRB. The results presented an immense potential for SAW in rail repair.

Repair of light rail track through restoration of the worn part of the railhead using submerged arc welding process

The effects of vanadium content on the microstructural and mechanical properties of a newly developed hot-work die steel (MPS700V) at room and elevated temperatures have been investigated in this paper. It shows that the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of MPS700V at room temperature and 700 °C are both strongly dependent on the V content. With the increase of V content from 0 to 1.2% V, The UTS at room temperature increases from 1127 MPa to 1442 MPa, and the UTS at 700 °C increases from 400 MPa to 550 MPa. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) shows that the addition of V is beneficial to increase the nucleation rate and volume fraction of MC nano-carbides during the tempering process, and the size of the MC nano-carbides decreases with the increase of V content. The addition of V also increases the thermal stability of MC nano-carbides at 700 °C, which can be related to the reducing the interface mismatch between MC and matrix. Furthermore, a transformation from Orowan bypass strengthening mechanism to shearing strengthening mechanism caused by the V addition is proposed based on the theoretical analysis and TEM observation.

Effects of vanadium content on the carbides transformation and strengthening mechanism of MPS700V hot-work die steel at room and elevated temperatures

Many problems like precision control difficulty, unstable structure properties, and waste of welding materials were encountered when remanufacturing hot forging die with manual arc surfacing method. Therefore, the automatic wire arc additive remanufacturing (WAAM) technology is put forward. By using failed forging die as remanufacturing substrate, this technology can bring out double advantages of cyclic utilization and high accuracy, which is of great application prospect. In this paper, the WAAM process of a failed crankshaft forging die is studied. Firstly, a new slicing algorithm which gets its outline polygon by classifying and reconstructing the intersection points of triangular patches and tangent planes is proposed. The key thought of this algorithm is to judge the order of these intersection points with normal vector and put them into the “starting” or “ending” arrays. By traversing through these two arrays, the treatment efficiency gets much better than before. Simultaneously, by parameterizing the chord length accumulation, an interpolation fitting algorithm is introduced to improve the accuracy of outline polygon and the criterion equation of outline polygon’s orientation is deduced. Then a composite filling algorithm with uniform inside and smooth margin is developed to meet the requirements of WAAM process. Finally, the WAAM process for a failed crankshaft forging die is conducted, which justifies the feasibility of the whole process.
