The efficiency of the RF power sources is one of the major concerns in the large-scale high-energy accelerator projects such as the future circular collider (FCC) and the compact linear collider (CLIC). The new bunching method, the core stabilization method (CSM), can achieve high efficiency in the case of shorter interactive length. The multibeam klystron (MBK) could accommodate high RF power with a low operating voltage, compared with a single-beam klystron. This article presents the design and simulation of a 650-MHz, 0.9-MW continuous wave (CW) CSM MBK. The detailed design of a six-beam optics system is also elaborated in this article. The performance of such a device was validated by the 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC)-code computer simulation. With an operating voltage of 50 kV, PIC simulation predicts an efficiency of 81.8%.

Modeling and Design of a High-Efficiency Multibeam Klystron

Development overview and test results of a multibeam inductive output tube that produces over 1.2 MW peak power at 704 MHz with over 65% efficiency are presented. This is a collaborative effort between Thales Electron Devices and Communications & Power Industries to design and fabricate a new RF source for the European Spallation Source. The first prototype unit has been designed and built. Initial test at CERN demonstrated output power of 1.2 MW peak, efficiency of 69.8%, and gain of 21.4 dB at 1-ms operation. When the pulselength was increased to 4 ms, instability in the RF output pulse developed as the result of a mechanical contact issue in the output window. The prototype is in the process of being repaired and the unit will be returned to CERN for full characterization and final testing in early 2018.

Several years ago, the prototype of a higher-order mode inductive output tube (HOM-IOT), which was developed at CPI, suffered from various technological flaws, including warping of the large annular control grid structure. Means to prevent the warping of the grid have been found since then and the development of a 10 MW long-pulse, 1.3 GHz MBK (multibeam klystron) is being carried out at CPI for the TESLA project, sponsored by DESY, Hamburg, and this has led to an invention that permits the focusing of off-axis electron beams. This makes it possible to replace the quasi-annular beam in the HOM-IOT with an adequate number of electron beams which greatly increases the likelihood of the next super-power HOM-IOT being successful.

Development of a 1.2 MW peak, 704 MHz multi-beam inductive output tube

IOTs (inductive output tubes) are relatively novel vacuum electron devices that have established their position as reliable and highly efficient UHF amplifiers, predominantly in the television transmitter service. In this application, they reach output power levels equivalent to about 50 kW CW. Scientific applications, like proton accelerators, require UHF amplifiers with considerably higher output power capability. Super power klystrons are available for this service; however, IOTs offer some advantages over klystrons in terms of efficiency: higher basic efficiency; power regulation possible at full output power (no saturation); inconsequential drop of efficiency at reduced output power. Higher order mode IOTs (IOM-IOTs) possess the added advantage of lower operational voltage and smaller size. Based on these expectations, a development of a 700 MHz HOM-IOT, sponsored by the Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been carried out by CPI. The development attention was paid to the suppression of both unwanted modes and stray radiation from the space between electron gun and body. Focusing the electron beam was another issue that required high modeling effort.
