Motivated by the fact that XML is increasingly being used in distributed applications, we propose building a cooperative caching scheme for XML documents. Our scheme allows sharing cache content among a number of peers. To facilitate sharing, a distributed prefix-based index is built based on the queries whose results are cached. In the loosely-coupled sharing approach, each peer stores in its local cache results of its own queries and just publishes the associated queries to the index. In the tightly-coupled approach, each peer is assigned a specific part of the query space and stores in its local cache the results of the corresponding queries. Both approaches result in a dynamic organization of content that evolves over time based on the query load, the number of peers and the overall storage available. We present a number of associated design choices such as using a DHT for distributing the prefix-based index and a proactive cache replacement policy. We also report on a number of experiments that show the benefits of cooperative caching and highlight the pros and cons of loosely and tightly coupled cache sharing.

Cooperative XPath caching

XML Mediators are focused on supporting the XQuery (or sometimes the SQL/XML) query language on XML views of heterogeneous data sources. Wrappers leverage data sources to XML views with basic query capabilities. The data are integrated on demand by the mediator delegating sub-queries to wrappers. Using such information integration platforms to query the semantic web is a challenge both for scalability and data semantic reasons. On another side, semantic Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are emerging as an important infrastructure to manage distributed data, notably on the web. An important goal concerns improving query facilities of distributed heterogeneous data. Coupling data mediation and P2P technology, P2P data mediation strives to support efficiently advanced queries upon heterogeneous data sources annotated with various metadata and mapping schemes. We analyze the main services provided by mediation systems and discuss their extension to the semantic web in P2P mode. We shortly discuss the annotation service for describing sources syntactically and semantically, the routing service to route data location requests, and the query service to resolve distributed queries. We survey some projects and report on PathFinder, an experimental P2P mediation system developed at University of Versailles in the Context of the Satine European project.

P2P Semantic Mediation of Web Sources

This paper will describe a vision for a new kind of information system that can dynamically self-organise and reason over its contents. The architecture is lightweight and would be suitable for an Internet-based environment, or alternatively, a mobile or pervasive sensorised environment. The lightweight architecture will rely on dynamic links, created through the query process, to self-organise. Results will show that the linking mechanism is reliable and can be combined with knowledge-based approaches, such as semantics, to provide extra functionality over what similar systems can currently provide. An overall architecture that could be called autonomic and cognitive will be suggested. This architecture could be used locally as part of a neural-like brain, or globally in a distributed information system. Autonomic features covered will be self-organisation and self-supervision, while different levels of reasoning will allow for an overall cognitive model that may even be able to think for itself.

Autonomic and cognitive possibilities for information or neural-like systems using dynamic links

A knowledge network is a construct that will organise knowledge in a way that allows it to be efficiently retrieved and used. While an Internet-based network is the obvious application area, the system would also be suitable for pervasive sensorised environments. Key elements thereof are its lightweight, reference-based structure and its autonomous nature. This paper is concerned with describing the querying process that will be used to retrieve information from the network. For this process, the network metadata will act as a lightweight and distributed ontology, where the hierarchical structures of the network will describe the main relationships and guide the search. Then, using autonomous querying, the ontology can be updated with personal references between sources, allowing for semantically unrelated concepts to also be linked together. A novel linking mechanism is described that is shown to be effective, dynamic and adaptive, and could be particularly useful in tomorrow's Semantic Web environment.

Autonomous Querying for Knowledge Networks

Increasing popularity of XML and P2P networks has generated much interest in distributed processing of XML data. We propose a novel solution organized around a mediator capable of processing XQueries over multiple heterogeneous data sources. The solution consists in a hierarchical overlay network formed of peers and super-peers indexing the XML path of data sources. Our solution is: (i) Scalable as the network can grow dynamically with size adaptative trie-based indexes in each super-peer. (ii) Reliable as procedures are developed for recovering from node failures or root saturations. (iii) Efficient as query processing is done by an existing optimized mediator that can track query process progresses and response sizes
