The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an active volume of 7.2× 6.1× 7.0 m3. It is installed at the CERN Neutrino Platform in a specially-constructed beam that delivers charged pions, kaons, protons, muons and electrons with momenta in the range 0.3 GeV/c to 7 GeV/c. Beam line instrumentation provides accurate momentum measurements and particle identification. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, and it incorporates full-size components as designed for that module. This paper describes the beam line, the time projection chamber, the photon detectors, the cosmic-ray tagger, the signal processing and particle reconstruction. It presents the first results on ProtoDUNE-SP's performance, including noise and gain measurements, dE/dx calibration for muons, protons, pions and electrons, drift electron lifetime measurements, and photon detector noise, signal sensitivity and time resolution measurements. The measured values meet or exceed the specifications for the DUNE far detector, in several cases by large margins. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation starting in 2018 and its production of large samples of high-quality data demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design.

A growing number of experiments with particle detectors using liquid argon are currently being carried out, as this is an excellent means of detecting neutrinos. These experiments develop different capture and measurement systems of the photons generated by the excitation of the argon atoms when a charged particle passes. New low-cost technologies, more sensitive and efficient detection methods, hardware and electronics, optimize and take advantage of the characteristics of the processes involved. This minireview presents the main characteristics of photodetection systems used in some of the most important experiments for the finding of neutrinos, particularly those that use liquid argon at cryogenic temperatures (-186 °C), such as Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment and the Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment. In addition, this article presents a comparison of the advances of each cryogenic photodetection system with the aim of promoting the use of this technology in new research fields.

Liquid argon photodetection systems for neutrino detectors: A minireview


 Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) is a material with a very good radiation hardness and with the possibility of deposition on flexible substrates like Polyimide (PI). Exploiting these properties, the HASPIDE (Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon PIxels DEtectors) project has the goal of developing a-Si:H detectors on flexible substrates for beam dosimetry and profile monitoring, neutron detection and space experiments. The detectors for this experiment will be developed in two different structures: the n-i-p diode structure, which has been used up to now for the construction of the planar a-Si:H detectors, and the recently developed charge selective contact structure. In the latter the doped layers (n or p) are replaced with charge selective materials namely electron-selective conductive metal-oxides (TiO2 or Al:ZnO) and hole-selective conductive metal oxides (MoO
 x
 ). In this paper preliminary data on the capabilities of these detectors to measure X-ray and electron fluxes will be presented. In particular, the linearity, the sensitivity, the stability and dark current in various conditions will be discussed.

HASPIDE: a project for the development of hydrogenated amorphous silicon radiation sensors on a flexible substrate

Abstract Baryon number conservation is not guaranteed by any fundamental symmetry within the standard model, and therefore has been a subject of experimental and theoretical scrutiny for decades. So far, no evidence for baryon number violation has been observed. Large underground detectors have long been used for both neutrino detection and searches for baryon number violating processes. The next generation of large neutrino detectors will seek to improve upon the limits set by past and current experiments and will cover a range of lifetimes predicted by several Grand Unified Theories. In this White Paper, we summarize theoretical motivations and experimental aspects of searches for baryon number violation in neutrino experiments.

ProtoDUNE Single Phase at CERN is the large scale prototype for the far detector of the future DUNE experiment. ProtoDUNE is in stable operation since Oct. 2018 at the CERNNeutrino Platform. Test beam data in the energy range of sub-GeV to a few GeV were collected in fall 2018 providing a set of key measurements. Particles (electrons, protons, pions, muons and kaons) are identified combining information from a set of beam-line detectors (Time of Flight, Cherenkov) and TPC reconstruction. Three different technologies are implemented in the protoDUNE photon detector system (PDS). Results from the ARAPUCA response, one of the PDS components, are presented providing first calorimetric energy measurements and particle ID of beam events from LAr scintillation light signals.
