A medium voltage (MV) cable network is a substantial component of the distribution network. Present management of this grid segment is mainly based on the failure rate analysis, i.e., a rise in the number and kind of faults on the actual line means that its technical condition is getting worse. The efficiency of the power system is low and additional costs of repair works, supply interruption, difficulties in the investment planning and operation and maintenance works are necessary. The aim of the R&D works done in the realised project is to implement the management of the MV cable network based on the estimated condition of the individual cable line, obtained from diagnostic measurements. The diagnostic investigations of the cable lines are the reference. Many years of research work have led to the development of the Health Index based on diagnostic, technical and service data.

The Proposal of a New Tool for Condition Assessment of Medium Voltage Power Cable Lines

Precise permanent fault localization is an important task for fast power restoration in underground HV cable systems. Among online fault localization methods, the fault localization accuracy strongly relies on the type and volume of measurement, and there is always a tradeoff between localization accuracy and measurement cost. To balance the tradeoff, a data-efficient HV cable fault localization framework is proposed in this paper. First, the fault characteristics of sheath currents are analyzed in modal mode, and compared with the conventional core conductor measurements. It is discerned that the sum of three phases sheath currents has similar characteristics, which can be measured by fewer sensors in a lower rating as the replacement of the conventional core conductor measurements. Second, the challenges of recognizing the wavefront arrival in the sheath are presented, and a Convolution Neural Network is introduced for the localization purpose. The proposed approach can realize high localization accuracy with low-cost measurement, and keep consistent performance under various scenarios through limited training datasets. A case study has been carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC platform to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed approach, followed by a discussion on the results.

An Online Data-Efficient HV Cable Fault Localization Approach Via an AI-Enabled Recognition of Modal Wavefront in Sheath Current

With the rapid development of urban construction, there are more and more civil engineering construction which take place in a certain scale of area in most cities during recent years. Power supply faults caused by the construction occur frequently, which are somehow even hard to be prevented. Therefore, it is necessary and of great importance to develop a technology that can forewarn the cable to be cut or broken in advance. Till now, there are already many scholars who have studied the issue of status monitoring for all types of cables, however, there are hardly any technical means in power supply system to realize anti-breaking function for cables during engineering construction. Even if there are some reports shows the monitoring system design which can prevent the occurrence of cable failure due to engineering construction, but it cannot determine whether the construction is in the cable area so that it may be easy to cause false alarm. In this paper, a non-invasive anti-breaking cable monitoring device and method has been proposed, which can send an alarm before the cable is cut, and can notify the nearby operation and maintenance personnel to check, thus the safety of the cable can be ensured.

Innovative Quality Measurements for Long HV Cables

This paper deals with an alternative method for monitoring of long and very long HVAC and HVDC cable systems concerning the detection and localization of fatal breakdown errors during routine and commissioning tests as well as under service conditions. The presented principle is based on the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) and differs fundamentally from the well-known and established methods. It is applicable to land and submarine cables. The operation of the measuring system should be completely invisible and long-term reliable until the cable system fails. Measurements at installed cable systems have already proved the practical suitability.This paper describes the theoretical concept of the proposed fault location. Necessary measurement systems are described. Furthermore, measurements at installed and stored cables are introduced and evaluated. A special focus is the influence of the high voltage components to the measurement. An automated evaluation procedure is used for the evaluation.The proposed method can be used for a very fast fault location with high accuracy. The required conditions are worked out.
