Circulating Levels of Allopregnanolone in Humans: Gender, Age, and Endocrine Influences
Ar Genazzani,Felice Petraglia,F Bernardi,Elena Casarosa,C Salvestroni,A. Tonetti,Rossella E. Nappi,Stefano Luisi,Marco Palumbo,Robert H. Purdy,M. Luisi +10 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that although men show an age-related decrease, serum allopregnanolone levels in women do not change with age and correlate with P levels during the menstrual cycle and in response to endocrine tests.
Serum Allopregnanolone Levels in Pregnant Women: Changes during Pregnancy, at Delivery, and in Hypertensive Patients
Stefano Luisi,Felice Petraglia,Chiara Benedetto,R. E. Nappi,F Bernardi,M Fadalti,Fm Reis,M. Luisi,Ar Genazzani +8 more
TL;DR: Investigating the presence and the possible changes in serum allopregnanolone and progesterone levels in pregnant women during gestation, at delivery, and in patients with chronic hypertension, with or without superimposed preeclampsia suggested involvement of this neurosteroid in the adaptive processes induced by pregnancy.

Allopregnanolone concentrations and premenstrual syndrome
Palmiero Monteleone,Stefano Luisi,A. Tonetti,F Bernardi,Ad Genazzani,M. Luisi,Felice Petraglia,Ar Genazzani +7 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that patients with PMS may suffer from an inadequate production of ovarian neuroactive steroids, especially in the luteal phase, which would lead to an impaired anxiolytic GABA(A)-mediated response in stressful physiological and psychological conditions, and may in part explain various psychoneuroendocrine symptoms that arise during PMS.
Six-month oral dehydroepiandrosterone supplementation in early and late postmenopause
Massimo Stomati,Patrizia Monteleone,Elena Casarosa,B. Quirici,Simone Puccetti,F Bernardi,Alessandro D. Genazzani,Lucio C. Rovati,M. Luisi,Ar Genazzani +9 more
TL;DR: The effects of a 6-month DHEA supplementation in early and late postmenopausal women, with normal or overweight body mass index, on the level of circulating steroids, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), β-endorphin and gonadotropins, and on the adrenal gland response to dexamethasone suppression and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation are investigated.

Progesterone, progestagens and the central nervous system
Ar Genazzani,Massimo Stomati,A. Morittu,F Bernardi,Patrizia Monteleone,Elena Casarosa,R. Gallo,C Salvestroni,M. Luisi +8 more
TL;DR: Experimental and clinical studies focused the attention of researchers on interactions between oestrogens and progestins in the neuroendocrine control of the brain functions and its clinical implications.
