A direct time-domain finite-difference method is used to recharacterize the microstrip. Maxwell's equations are discretized both in time and space and a Gaussian pulse is used to excite the microstrip. The frequency-domain data are obtained from the Fourier transform of the calculated time-domain field values. Since this method is completely independent of all the above-mentioned investigations, the results can be considered as an impartial verification of the published results. The comparison of the time-domain results and those from the frequency-domain methods has shown the integrity of the time-domain computations. This method is very general and can be applied to model many other microwave components. >

Calculations of the dispersive characteristics of microstrips by the time-domain finite difference method

The distortion of pulses due to dispersion and coupling on generalized planar microstrip is investigated. A simple, general form for the Green's function is obtained by solving the boundary value problem separately for the TE and TM modes. The mechanism of even/odd-mode distortion is discussed and numerical results are presented illustrating its effect. The design of structures with low even/odd-mode distortion is considered. Results for pulse distortion on this type of microstrip are also included. >

Pulse distortion on multilayer coupled microstrip lines

The problem of an open microstrip line of arbitrary cross section is solved by an integral equation technique in conjunction with the method of moments. The approach is general and can handle, as special cases, multiple strips and strips of finite or infinitesimal thickness. It applies to both the fundamental and higher order modes, whether in the bound or the leaky regime. Computed dispersion curves and modal current distributions are presented for several cases of interest and, where possible, are compared with published data. >

Rigorous analysis of open microstrip lines, of arbitrary cross section in bound and leaky regimes

A simple expression of effective dielectric constant for a microstrip on a multi-layered substrate is derived with the quasi-TEM assumption and the superposition of partial capacitance. Our method for a single-layer substrate provides a difference of within 2.32% compared to full-wave simulation. For the double layer case, our results are less than 2.2% different with an enhanced spectral domain technique and 1.6% with a variation method.

A new formula for effective dielectric constant in multi-dielectric layer microstrip structure

A newly developed closed-form asymptotic representation of the grounded dielectric slab Green's function is used in a moment-method formulation to calculate the propagation constant of an infinite microstrip transmission line and the input impedance of a finite-length, center-fed printed dipole. In these problems, source and field points are laterally rather than vertically separated with respect to the substrate. The conventional Sommerfeld integral and the plane wave spectral integral (PWS) representations of the microstrip Green's function converge very slowly in this case. However, the asymptotic closed-form representation of the Green's function does not have this limitation, and it remains accurate even for very small lateral separation between source and observation points. A modified form of the Sommerfeld integral representation is used only for observation points in the immediate vicinity of the source, while the asymptotic form is used elsewhere. Some numerical results based on this approach are presented and are shown to compare very well with previous results based on the corresponding exact-integral or PWS forms of the Green's function. >

Efficient analysis of planar microstrip geometries using a closed-form asymptotic representation of the grounded dielectric slab Green's function

A method based on spectral-domain analysis is derived to compute effectively and automatically the effective relative permittivity of an open microstrip line. Simple but accurate closed-form expressions are used as the basis functions of the longitudinal and transverse current distributions. The numerical results are shown in tables and figures for various cases and compared WMI other available results. The results presented here are seen as having a high degree of accuracy and may be used as reference standards,
