Fish is generally regarded as a primary source of protein for many poor African fishing communities. The present study compared the relative importance of fish as a high-quality dietary protein source with meat in fishing communities in two states in Nigeria. Fifty fishing households in which active fishing was the primary activity and fifty non-fishing households (agriculture being stated as primary activity) in traditional fishing communities were randomly selected in the coastal state of Lagos and the inland state of Niger. A simple weighing balance was designed and given to each household to measure fish or meat entering the household for consumption. A comparison of consumption using this method against the 24h recall method revealed that the recall method accounted for only one third of actual fish consumed. Overall, the price of fish was higher and consumption lower in Lagos compared with Niger State. At the household level in both states, the consumption of fish in fishing households was twice that of non-fishing households, whereas meat consumption was similar. A total of thirty-nine different fish species were consumed, with Tilapia contributing 24% by weight of the fish consumed. In both states, beef was the most frequently consumed meat, followed by goat meat. The study revealed a high preference for fresh fish. The highest fish consumption occurred in March, corresponding to the period of lowest meat consumption. Inter-household and intra-household patterns of fish and meat consumption in fishing communities in two states in Nigeria.

Fish is generally regarded as a primary source of protein for many poor African fishing villages. Most of the fish consumed in the fishing villages in Nigeria consists of freshwater species such as tilapia. Tilapia previously considered of little commercial value is now being considered a human food. The aim of the present study was to determine the importance of tilapia in the diet of fishing villages in Niger state, Nigeria by examining the household consumption of different fish species. A total of one hundred households in fishing villages in five local government areas (LGA) of Niger state were randomly selected for the study. The households consisted of fifty fishing households where active fishing was the primary activity and fifty non–fishing households (where agriculture was the primary activity). A 24 hour recall was used to obtain the amount of fish consumed by each household, the form of fish cooked (fresh, smoked, dried) and the source of fish (whether the fish was purchased in the market or caught directly by household members from local rivers). A general linear model was used to analyse fish consumption to establish significant (p<0.05) differences in monthly fish consumption between fishing and non-fishing households. A total of 24 fish species were recorded in the diet of the people with tilapia contributing the highest percentage (19% by weight) of the fish consumed. All fishing and non–fishing households consumed fish during the survey period. Fish consumption was significantly higher in fishing than non–fishing households. Fishing households consumed an  average of 188g of fish per day (69kg/year) compared with 127g fish per day (46kg/year) for non-fishing households. Household consumption of fish varied during the year. The highest fish consumption occurred in March, 2009 in all the households. There was a negative correlation (r = - 0.124, p = 0.013) between fish consumption and income. The study shows a high preference for fresh fish.

This study has examined the role of traditional aquaculture systems and fish in food security and livelihoods of fishing communities in two states in Nigeria. The research focused on the productivity, sustainability and profitability of the aquaculture systems including social and economic conditions of farmers. The study also compared the relative importance of fish as a high quality protein source with meats in fishing communities in two states in Nigeria. Data were collected from 400 farmers with modern and traditional aquaculture systems in Niger and Lagos states using semi-structured questionnaires. Modern aquaculture consisted of small fish ponds with an average size of 0.1 ha. Liming was not widespread among farmers with fish ponds but fertilisation was done before stocking by applying fertilisers of both organic and inorganic origins. Farmers (90%) obtained their seeds from the hatcheries and the average stocking density was 5730 ha-1. Polyculture was widely practised by farmers and local feeds were used in feeding fish. Fish shelters and fish fences were the traditional aquaculture systems that were widely practised in two states in Nigeria and are poorly researched and recorded. Various materials were used in the construction of traditional aquaculture systems including branches, elephant grasses, worn out tyres, PVC pipes and clay pots and, were constructed in order to aggregate fish. There was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in yield of fish from fish parks and modern aquaculture systems. The study showed that fishermen prefer fishing in the vicinity of fish parks, tube shelters and fish fences because they make more catches around the installations. Cost–benefit analysis showed that traditional aquaculture systems are profitable because the level of investment required to set and maintain them is quite low compared to returns obtained from them. Fifty actively fishing and fifty non–fishing households in traditional fishing communities were randomly selected in Niger and Lagos states for fish consumption survey. A Simple scale was designed and given to each household to measure fish or meat entering the household for consumption. Intra household fish distribution and consumption was obtained by 24 hour recall method. A large number of fish species were consumed in the fishing communities confirming the relative abundance of the species in local rivers, floodplains and lagoons. Tilapia was the most consumed fish species contributing 19 and 32% by weight of the fish consumed in Niger and Lagos state, respectively. Beef was the most consumed meat followed by goat meat. The study reveals high preference for fresh fish and meat. Highest fish consumption occurred in March corresponding to period of lowest meat consumption. The role of traditional aquaculture systems and fish in food security and livelihoods of fishing communities in two states in Nigeria

A study on patterns of mudskipper consumption in selected fishing communities of Rivers State, was carried out, to determine the consumption rate, size preference, price mechanism and preparation methods of this species among the people living in these areas. A structured questionnaire was administered to 120 randomly selected respondents’ communities across 3 LGA of the state. The results obtained from the study indicated that consumption of mudskipper was more acceptable among the old than the young people. Mudskippers are being sold more in fresh form (70.83%), rather than smoked ones (20.87%). On the mode of utilization of Mudskippers, it was discovered that it is more used in preparation of native soup (45.83%), than other consumption variables such as stew, condiment and pepper soup. The price of mudskippers varies from one, community to another and ranges between N20/kg to N200/kg, with the average price of N50/kg (35.83%) and N100/kg (30. 83%) making it one of the cheapest fishery products. This makes it accessible and affordable to most people in these communities.

Patterns of mudskipper consumption in selected fishing communities of Rivers State.

The findings are presented of a nutrition survey carried out in the framework of the Nigerian-German Kainji Lake Fisheries Promotion Project in March/April 1995. The major aim of the study was to obtain closer information on the food habits and food consumption patterns of the fishing population, especially the quantification of fish and small fish in particular, consumed at the household level. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect relevant information on demographic, education and occupational profiles; the information was collected in 39 villages in the southern sector of Kainji Lake. ABSTRACT Data on spatiotemporal distribution of rotavirus diarrhea are limited in many endemic settings. This study determined the prevalence and seasonal distribution of rotavirus among Nigerian children with diarrhea. Here, a total of 406 fecal samples were collected from patients attending six health facilities in Lagos between January – December 2019. Socio-demographic data of each enrolled child were collected. Rotavirus VP6 antigen was detected by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) and confirmation by VP7 gene detection by reverse transcription polymerase-chain reaction. The overall rotavirus diarrhea prevalence was 16.3% by ELISA with children above 2 years having 29.2% of this prevalence and higher occurrence in females (59.1%) than males (40.9%) (P < .05). Rotavirus diarrhea diagnosis using RT-PCR showed 100% concordance with ELISA. Cases of rotavirus diarrhea were detected from March to July and from September to November with the highest number of cases detected in May and June (22.7% each), followed by July (21.2%). The prevalence of rotavirus diarrhea remains high in Lagos with an emerging higher disease activity in children above 2. A different rotavirus transmission dynamics compared to previous studies from Nigeria and other African countries was found. VP6 ELISA may reliably be used for continuous rotavirus surveillance in Nigeria.
