Abstract This article reviews the literature on computer uses in second language and foreign language learning from 1990 to 2000 inclusive. Given the strong interest in technology use for language learning, it is important to look at how technology has been used in the field thus far. The goals of this research are twofold: (1) to understand how computers have been used in the past 11 years to support second and foreign language learning and (2) to explore any evidence regarding how computer technology can enhance acquisition of language skills. This article discusses the findings under the following categories: potentials of computer technology and its use in specific areas, software tools used in certain language skill areas, software design considerations, computerized language testing, and research findings from studies using quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies. Finally, issues important for future research are also discussed.

Method, system and computer readable medium for addressing handling from a computer program

This paper looks at some common structures for legal documents and describes how these structures can be mapped automatically into the Guide hyper-text system. Next it considers the types of cross references contained in a document and how they can be mapped into the links that integrate disparate independent hierarchical documents into a seamless directed graph universe of text. Next comes a discussion of how to accommodate multiple versions of a document, two-way references and footnotes. This is followed by a consideration of two access methods: cumulative index and boolean query. Finally we look at texts which help the lawyer create an original document: precedent books for drafting.

Guiding lawyers: mapping law into hypertext

The paper begins by considering the need to provide a learner-directed computer package to help mature students to perfect their English. The information they require to do this has two components: expert procedural knowledge and expert domain knowledge. Expert procedural knowledge encompasses the lexical, grammatical and discourse skills involved in writing good English. Expert domain knowledge is the collection of documents from different genres that is accepted by the native speaking community. This collection is dynamic. Three components of special interest to the implementors of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) packages are dictionaries and thesauri, tagged corpora, and discipline-specific documents generated by scholars or professionals in a specialist field. The paper considers, with examples, how corpora of each type can best contribute examples and exercises to suit learners of a wide range of abilities. Examples are drawn from the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD) and the Susanne Corpus. Dictionaries excel in the provision of general lexical exercises, but are inadequate for grammar or discourse. Tagged corpora are unreliable for some lexical examples but are superb for clause level grammatical exercises and simple discourse exercises that rely on easily recognizable frameworks such as enumeration. Neither of these prime sources is adequate for specialist vocabulary or domain-specific document structures such as laboratory reports which require resort to specialist dictionaries and texts.

Using corpora as a resource in language teaching

The project presented has looked at novel retrieval methods for a variety of legal documents using the DAP parallel processor. The system has three main components: the document selector-this may be either the DAPText index server or any other suitable retrieval engine (DAPText is a database indexing engine from Cambridge Parallel Processing which runs on the DAP 610C, a massively parallel Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) processor; the object server or document retriever that returns the full text of selected documents; and the graphical user interface (GUI) that manages the interactions-for example, it translates the user queries into a form appropriate for the retrieval engine being used and converts the retrieved documents from the database storage format into Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) for the Web.

To meet the needs of an individual student, an adaptive CALL environment must have a dynamic model of student performance, a means of varying the difficulty of the learning task, and a mapping between student competence and task complexity. There are two main types of user-adaptive interfaces for language learning: discrete-step interfaces and continuously variable interfaces. Before designers can build CALL systems that "understand" their users, they must be able to analyze the interactions between the user and the computer in the language learning task. Language learning skills may be divided into the categories of lexical skills, syntactical skills and discourse skills. The first task in recording and measuring student performance is to devise a user profile; the second task is to ensure a continuum of exercises. Once the student has decided what linguistic skill to work on, there are four stages to the exercise generation process: (1) determining a suitable source; (2) choosing suitable passages; (3) selecting from these passages examples most suited to user needs; and (4) generating the electronic version of the exercise. The format of the exercise used in this study was found to be generally effective; however it is unclear to what degree there is a correlation between readability grade and exercise difficulty. Rationale for Computer Assisted Language Learning Students who are learning English as a Foreign Language in an English-speaking country form a multicultural group with disparate motivations and goals, whose diversity cannot be adequately accommodated in a traditional classroom. There is no rate of imparting information nor sequence of instruction that will meet the needs of every student. Teachers can only construct in their mind a model of the 'average' student and have as their goal the adequate progress of this hypothetical student; frequently they are guiltily aware that the more ahle will be bored while the less able will be lost. Today computerised language learning packages offer the niajorit of students their only realistic opportunity for individual tuition. Even with the most mundane of CALL packages. each student can essay an answer to every question, repeat lessons not fully comprehended or skip lessons that merely rehearse previously acquired skills. A CALL package which permits a student to make this sort of choice is sometimes referred to as a user-tailored system. Self-directed learning of this kind has been shown to benefit mature learners, that is, experienced students of proven academic competence (Kearsley & Hillelsohn. 1982), who are capable of determining their own educational needs. However, less experienced or less able students may not be able to make an accurate assessment of their own shortcomings or to devise for themselves a coherent and comprehensive study plan. For these students. a CALL package can be immeasurably improved by a user-adaptive interface i.e. an interface where adaptations in the order and pace of learning are made by the system, not by the student. User-Adaptive Interfaces A u.s( r-adaptive interface is one which can change its behaviour automatically in response to its experience of user performance, that is, it changes to suit the skills and knowledge of an individual student. The system designer or language teacher no longer tries to construct an interface for a stereotypical average user, to which no real learner conforms. Instead, the designer accepts that no single learning theory pattern is suitable for all students or even for one student over a range of skills or a period of time and realises that the teaching package must adapt to the student's varying abilities in different skills by providing information and exercises at a level which matches the student's current needs. To this end an adaptive learning package must have three components: a means of recording and measuring individual student performance. This could also be described as a dynamic model of the user's past performance and current capability. This dimension of capability is inevitabt continuous rathcr than discrete.
