VoiceXML is a markup language for creating voice-user interfaces. It uses speech and telephone touchtone recognition for input and prerecorded audio and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) for output. It's based on the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) Extensible Markup Language (XML) and leverages the Web paradigm for application development and deployment. By having a common language, application developers, platform vendors, and tool providers all can benefit from code portability and reuse. The paper discusses VoiceXML and the W3C speech interface framework.

Practical Spoken Dialog Systems

Nowadays, thanks to new tools and devices, students have more possibility to learn in a mobile way. Hence, e-learning platforms should support user mobility by offering access points to mobile devices. The system must adapt information corresponding to a learning activity to device's capabilities. Documents are provided in accordance to activities performed. For the coordination of activities we designed a flexible work-flow system named Cooperative Open Workflow. In this paper, we present our architecture which aims to support work coordination and user mobility.

Workflow and Mobile Devices in Open Distance Learning

The World Wide Web Voice Browser Working Group has released specifications for four integrated languages to developing speech applications: VoiceXML 2.0, Speech Synthesis Markup Language, Speech Recognition Grammar Markup Language, and Semantic Interpretation. These languages enable developers to specify quickly conversational speech Web applications that can be accessed by any telephone or cell phone. The speech recognition and natural language communities are welcome to use these specifications and their implementations as they become available, as well as comment on the direction and details of these evolving specifications.

VoiceXML 2.0 and the W3C speech interface framework

In ubiquitous computing, most people need to track various sources of news using various devices, but it becomes difficult once there are more than a handful of sources. This is the reason for this is that users have to navigate to each page, load it, remember how it's formatted, and find where they last left off in the list. To solve these problems, many service providers provide RDF Site Summary documents. In this paper, we propose a newly designed news service using RSS and VoiceXML. RSS is an XML format that supports the syndication of news stories and similar content. There are several different formats for XML syndication that are referred to as RSS. Since RSS is in XML format, turning it into VoiceXML is easy and the synergy benefits of binding RSS and VXML are great. VoiceXML is a non-proprietary, web-based markup language for creating vocal dialogues between humans and computers. In this paper, we first focus on binding RSS and VXML, and RSS feed parsing. As a result of this research, we implement enhanced real time news service. People can use our service with their wired and wireless phone at any time, at any place. Also, we validate usability by comparing a typical RSS service scenario and typical VoiceXML service scenario, and calculating user's satisfaction.
