Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the characterization and reactivity of mononuclear oxygen species on oxide surfaces. Measurement of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters gives information which at the simplest level indicates the presence of a paramagnetic species but which can be sufficiently detailed to identify and characterize the adsorbed species. Measurements of the variation of the intensity of the signal with time can give kinetic data on reactions occurring at the surface. Although most of the EPR measurements have been carried out at low temperatures, there is evidence from the examples for some of the species that are stable at much higher temperatures and may play an important role in catalytic reactions.

Electronic Spectrum and Ultraviolet Optical Properties of Crystalline MgO

A GIVEN transition group complex is characterized by two sets of parameters: (1) the orbital energy differences in the partly filled shell (one value, Δ, in octahedral and tetrahedral symmetry, two quantities in linear, three in tetragonal, and four in lower symmetries), and (2) the parameters of interelectronic repulsion. This determines a two-dimensional classification of octahedral complexes, according to two variables : Δ in the spectrochemical series and β in the nephelauxetic series (see p. 138). β is the ratio between the value of a representative parameter of interelectronic repulsion, e.g. Β from eqn. (35), in the complex and in the corresponding gaseous ion. This definition is equivalent to the assumption of the expanded radial function model, conserving the separability of each orbital of the partly filled shell in the product of an arbitrary radial function and a linear combination of angular functions, hydrogenic and corresponding to a well-defined / = 2. As expected from the occurrence of nine different parameters in the M.O. theory of y 5 a 7 3 b without the assumption of / = 2 (see eqn. 75), the absorption spectra show that the assumption of a single value of β is an over-simplification. Therefore, the comparison of β in different metal ions is somewhat uncertain; this is also because not all the values of Β are known from atomic spectroscopy. On the other hand, the comparison of β in different octahedral complexes with varying ligands is much more certain for the same central ion.

Surface Coordination Chemistry of Atomically Dispersed Metal Catalysts.

Ultraviolet optical absorption, emission, and excitation spectra are presented for 14-MeV neutron-irradiated high-purity crystalline ${\mathrm{Al}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. Low-temperature polarized excitation spectra for the 3.8-eV luminescence correlated well with polarized absorption at 4.8 eV (both polarizations) and 5.4 eV ($\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{E}}\ensuremath{\perp}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{c}}$). These optical properties compare favorably with those predicted using wave functions from an earlier pointion calculation for the ${\mathrm{F}}^{+}$ center by La, Bartram, and Cox. The 4.8- and 5.4-eV absorption bands are assigned to the $1A\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1B$ and $1A\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2A$ transitions, respectively, of the ${F}^{+}$ center and the 3.8-eV luminescence is assigned to the $1B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1A$ transition. The $1A\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2B$ transition could not be conclusively identified, but preliminary evidence suggests it occurs near 6.3 eV. Similar absorption and emission bands are observed following energetic-proton and ${\mathrm{Al}}^{+}$ bombardment. Other uv optical properties are presented, including the quantum efficiency, lifetime, and temperature dependence of the emission.

Optical properties of the F + center in crystalline Al 2 O 3

Single crystals of MgO have been additively colored by heating them in Mg vapor at temperatures from 1600 to 1800\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C and pressures up to 4000 Torr. The ${F}^{+}$ and ${F}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ optical absorption bands (due to anion vacancies containing one and two electrons, respectively) were observed to be extremely similar but distinguishable, and were observed at liquid-nitrogen temperature to peak at 4.96 and 5.03 eV, respectively. The oscillator strength for the ${F}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ center is estimated to be 0.70\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05. A photoconversion process ${F}^{+}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ was studied. The luminescence bands for these centers were observed at 3.1 and 2.4 eV, respectively. The density of ${F}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ centers ${N}_{{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}}$ produced by the additive coloring process was observed to be related to the density of atoms in the vapor ${N}_{\mathrm{Mg}}$ by the equation ${N}_{{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}}=1270{N}_{\mathrm{Mg}}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{Q}{\mathrm{kT}}}$, where $Q=1.53$ eV. The temperature dependence of these two bands was measured and is discussed.

F + and F ′ Centers in Magnesium Oxide

The optical absorption and reflectivity of single crystals of MgO and the optical absorption of thin films of MgO, both supported by a LiF substrate and unsupported, have been measured in the energy range from 6 ev to 13.5 ev. Absorption peaks due to impurities were observed at 6.0 ev, 6.3 ev, and 6.9 ev. The room-temperature fundamental absorption and reflectivity spectra are interpreted in terms of an exciton peak at 7.6 ev with a probable second peak at 8.8 ev. Some evidence is present for additional exciton structure on the low-energy side of the first peak. The width of the forbidden energy band in MgO is estimated to be about 8.7 ev. The effects of temperature and internal strains on the absorption spectra are discussed.
