Disclosed herein is a horizontal boring apparatus which is comprised of a remotely controlled drilling tool lowered from a self-contained vehicle into a previously drilled vertical shaft. The tool mills away a 360 degree band of metal casing adjacent to the desired area to be bored, and extends a hydraulic powered rotary drilling tool into the formation by extending and retracting a telescoping base while alternating stabilization of the base and bit end of the drilling tool much like an inch worm. The tool is designed to drill a 1 inch bore hole up to 150 feet in any direction, or several directions. The tool and tool housing contain instrumentation for sensing direction, inclination, density, and temperature.

An oil tool forms holes or perforations which extend horizontally away from the borehole and into the formation for recovering additional oil and gas from the formation. The tool provides a downhole tool capable of drilling horizontally into a formation and further capable of operating in a relatively small well bore, such as those having a diameter of less than six inches. In addition, the tool does not tend to spiral or otherwise deviate from horizontal during drilling operations. The tool of the present invention includes a drill capable of drilling or tunneling through the formation, a magazine or carrier which contains a plurality of hollow joints or segments, a hydraulic pump and a mechanism for assembling and disassembling the segments. Once in place, the assembly mechanism removably attaches a segment from the magazine to the drill.

A 90° attachment provides versatility. The digger is thus capable of digging horizontal tunnels for laying one underground line under another underground line.

The present invention is an improved method of installing a flowline below the surface. The method includes the steps of establishing first and second sight relief holes along a linear path, positioning a directional drilling machine on the surface, boring a first portion of a pilot hole from the surface to the first sight relief hole, determining the elevation of the boring tool and adjusting the boring tool to the desired depth, boring a second portion of the pilot hole to the second relief hole, and determining the elevation of the boring tool and adjusting the tool to the desired depth. In another aspect of the invention, a method for directionally boring a flowline is provided. The method includes the steps of establishing a number of sight relief holes along the desired path of the bore, directionally drilling a pilot hole, reaming the material around pilot hole to define a bore wherein the bore is at least partially filled with a slurry of the reamed material, and pulling a pipe into the bore wherein a portion of the slurry is displaced into the sight relief holes so that pressure does not develop around the pipe.

Method of forming a trenchless flowline

A lateral hole boring method whereby a lateral hole of a desired length is formed underground by repeatedly performing the following steps. A vertical hole is prepared, and a lateral hole boring apparatus equipped with a leading auger of a smaller length than the diameter of the vertical hole is lowered into the vertical hole to a predetermined position. The apparatus is manipulated from the ground level to advance and rotate the leading auger to bore a lateral hole. When the lateral hole has reached a predetermined length commensurate with the length of the leading auger, the advance movement of the leading auger is stopped, and the lateral hole boring apparatus is manipulated from the ground level to detach the leading auger therefrom, and is lifted above the vertical hole while leaving the leading auger in the lateral hole. A coupling auger of a smaller length than the diameter of the vertical hole is attached to the lateral hole boring apparatus outside the vertical hole, and the apparatus is lowered into the vertical hole again. Then, the lateral hole boring apparatus is manipulated from the ground level to couple the coupling auger to the leading auger left behind in the lateral hole.
