This study examines how job engagement (JE) is affected by benevolent leadership (BL). This study also explores psychological safety (PS) and workplace friendship (WF) as mediators. Data were collected from employees working in Egypt’s five-star hotels and category (A) travel agencies. There were 320 valid responses that were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The findings demonstrated that there is a positive relationship between benevolent leadership and job engagement. There were positive relationships between benevolent leadership and PS/WF. The findings also revealed a positive relationship between PS/WF and job engagement. In addition, the findings revealed that psychological safety and workplace friendship mediate the relationship between BL and JE. This research contributes to the studies on BL, PS, and WF in terms of JE, specifically in the hospitality and tourism context. It also includes suggestions for enhancing the workplace environment in hotel and tourism enterprises via BL, PS, and WF.

The Effect of Benevolent Leadership on Job Engagement through Psychological Safety and Workplace Friendship Prevalence in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry

PurposeThis article presents the Special Issue (SI, 35-2) of ARLA, edited (not exclusively) with the best articles from the specialized conference of the Academy of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Knowledge (ACIEK, 2021) conference and performs a bibliometric analysis on innovation, management, governance and sustainable growth.Design/methodology/approachGuest editors conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the scholarly literature by examining the characteristics of publications and how articles published in this SI contribute to their growth.FindingsInnovation, management and governance for sustainable growth is an area that revolves around five points: (1) sustainable innovation in SMEs, (2) technological innovation, social capital and information patents to create value chains and financial development in the textile industry, (3) knowledge management and competitiveness for growth and productivity, (4) social entrepreneurship, business ecosystems and startups for sustainable development and (5) marketing-based business strategies for sustainable development.Practical implicationsFrom the analysis conducted, it is concluded that more research is needed on knowledge management and competitiveness in developing countries, such as Latin American and African countries, and to compare the results with more developed countries.

Analytical editorial: Ensuring the future of our world: innovation, management and governance for sustainable growth

In Vietnam, small and medium enterprises account for 95% of the total enterprises and are considered essential to economic restructuring, industrialization, and modernization. The development of this type of enterprise makes a necessary contribution to gross national income and economic growth and solves many social problems. However, the competitiveness of this business sector is still minimal, mainly due to the low quality of human resources. Thus, the article aims to explore the key factors affecting human resource quality and its impact on business operation performance. The article applied structural equation modeling and data surveying from 900 employees working for SMEs. Finally, seven factors affected the human resource quality and its impact on business operation performance with a level of 1%. The authors proposed managerial implications to enhance human resource quality for many sides: managers, business leaders, local authorities, and the Government.

Impacting Human Resource Quality on Business Operation Performance: A Case Study at Small and Medium Enterprises in Vietnam

This study examined the relationships among principals’ servant leadership, kindergarten teachers’ professional well-being, psychological empowerment, and an inclusive atmosphere. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 531 kindergarten teachers using purposive sampling. Results showed that (1) principals’ servant leadership positively predicted teachers’ professional well-being; (2) servant leadership positively predicted teachers’ psychological empowerment; (3) psychological empowerment mediated the relationship between servant leadership and teachers’ professional well-being; and (4) an inclusive kindergarten climate moderated the relationship between servant leadership and psychological empowerment. These findings clarify the mechanism through which servant leadership influences teachers’ professional well-being and provide practical implications for improving kindergarten management and promoting teachers’ occupational well-being. 

The Influence of Servant Leadership on the Professional Well-Being of Kindergarten Teachers: A Moderated Mediation Model

El presente estudio busca identificar por medio de una revisión sistemática de literatura si las empresas familiares realizan prácticas sociales de responsabilidad social empresarial (RSE), si estas contribuyen a su sostenibilidad empresarial en el largo plazo y si aportan a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) 3, 4, 5 y 8. La investigación se desarrolló a partir de una revisión bibliográfica de 46 publicaciones, efectuada de enero de 2015 a febrero de 2023, en la base de datos de WoS. Entre los resultados, se identificó que las empresas familiares sí realizan actividades sociales de RSE, sin embargo, no se logran asociar estas prácticas directamente a resultados en la sostenibilidad empresarial y el aporte a los ODS es escaso.

PurposeThis paper analyzes the influence of leadership styles and human resource management (HRM) on teacher well-being and how these contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3: Good Health and Well-being, 4: Quality Education, and 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. The analysis assesses the extent to which the well-being of schoolteachers is influenced by the human resource management and leadership style of the school management.Design/methodology/approachThe aim of this study is to determine how leadership by example, high communication leadership, human resource management and gender, influence two dimensions of teacher well-being, namely emotional and physical well-being. Gender was used as a moderating variable. The relationships between these variables are reflected in the hypotheses of this study. Linear regression analysis was used to test these hypotheses. The measurement scales were drawn from the literature. Data were obtained using non-probabilistic convenience sampling of 300 public and subsidized (concertado) high schools. To include large and medium-sized Spanish cities in the study, Madrid, Valencia, Malaga, and Murcia were selected. The final sample consisted of 315 high school teachers from 75 schools.FindingsThe results suggest that leadership by example and high communication leadership influence human resource management directly and positively. Human resource management, in turn, influences the physical and psychological well-being of schoolteachers.Originality/valueThis paper adds to the literature on leadership styles and human resource management by expanding the knowledge of factors influencing schoolteachers' well-being. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first article reporting a study on such factors in schools in Spain.
