Purpose: Assess the prevalence of low visual acuity in children of school age from the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul. Methods: During Projeto Saude e Cidadania/Acao Comunitaria, a program of primary health care that takes place in cities from the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul, from March to September of 2006, it was performed visual acuity test using the Snellen Chart in 338 children 4 to 15 years old, which came to the service spontaneously and freely. Prevalence of visual acuity less or equal to 20/30 and 20/40 and Fisher’s Test CI 95% was computed in Pepi4 program. Results: It was found in the present sample a prevalence of 20.1% (n = 68, CI: 15.9%-24.7%) and 11.2% (n = 38, CI: 8.0%-15.1%) for visual acuity equal or inferior to 20/30 and 20/40, respectively. Conclusion: The present study found a high prevalence of low visual acuity in our region. This emphasizes the importance of visual screening. The main goal of this kind of intervention is to give children a chance of developing their full potential.
