An alternative hypothesis for the evolution of same-sex sexual behaviour in animals
TL;DR: The authors hypothesize an ancestral condition of indiscriminate sexual behaviours directed towards all sexes, rather than a state in which different-sex sexual behaviour is a baseline and same-sexSexual behaviour is anomalous.

Divergence of premating behaviors in the closely related species Drosophila subquinaria and D. recens
Erin Giglio,Kelly A. Dyer +1 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that divergence in mating signals and preferences have occurred on a relatively short timescale within and between these species, and suggest that because olfactory cues are essential for D. subquinaria females to mate within species, they may also underlie variation in behavioral discrimination across populations and species.

Leptin regulates song effort in Neotropical singing mice (Scotinomys teguina)
Erin Giglio,Steven M. Phelps +1 more
TL;DR: The use of interoceptive and exteroceptive cues to modulate display effort in Alston's singing mouse, Scotinomys teguina is examined to understand the mechanisms by which animals respond to internal and external cues.

A. Kamath et al. reply.
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that indiscriminate sexual behaviour is the ancestral condition for sexually reproducing animals and that this, coupled with the potentially low costs of same-sex sexual behaviour (SSB), can contribute to explaining the prevalence of SSB across extant animals.
