The HP-ASD technology has experienced a huge development in the last decade. This can be appreciated by the large number of recently introduced drive configurations on the market. In addition, many industrial applications are reaching MV operation and megawatt range or have experienced changes in requirements on efficiency, performance, and power quality, making the use of HP-ASDs more attractive. It can be concluded that, HP-ASDs is an enabling technology ready to continue powering the future of industry for the decades to come.

Powering the Future of Industry: High-Power Adjustable Speed Drive Topologies

Wind power is one of the most promising emerging renewable energy technologies for distributed generation (DG). In this paper, a new nine-level active neutral-point-clamped (9L ANPC) converter is proposed for the grid connection of large wind turbines (WTs) to improve the waveform quality of the converter output voltage and current. Therefore, the bulky passive grid filters can be reduced or even removed. The topology, operating principles, control schemes, and main features, as well as semiconductor device selection of the proposed converter are presented in detail. The floating capacitor voltage control based on redundant switching states and capacitor prioritization is detailed. A comparison between the new topology and other existing 9L topologies is presented to illustrate the characteristics and performance of the new converter. The proposed 9L ANPC converter is studied in the case of the grid connection of a 6-MW WT without using passive grid filters in DG systems. Simulation and experiment results are presented to validate the proposed converter topology and control schemes. The proper operation and the compliance to the harmonic limit standards of the filterless grid-connected WT system are verified by simulation results.

A New Nine-Level Active NPC (ANPC) Converter for Grid Connection of Large Wind Turbines for Distributed Generation

This paper discusses historical and technical events in the U.S. and Europe over the last few years that are aimed at modernizing the electric power grid. The U.S. federal government has ratified the “smart grid initiative” as the official policy for modernizing the electricity grid including unprecedented provisions for timely information and control options to consumers and deployment of “smart” technologies. European countries are unified in researching and developing related technologies through various structures supported by the European Union. This paper presents the development of smart grids and an analysis of the methodologies, milestones, and expected evolutions of grid technologies that will transform society in the near future.

A Comparison of Smart Grid Technologies and Progresses in Europe and the U.S.

Although the adverse effects of using power electronic conversion on the insulation systems used in different apparatuses have been investigated, they are limited to low slew rates and repetitions. These results cannot be used for next-generation wide bandgap (WBG)-based conversion systems targeted to be fast (with a dv/dt up to 100 kV/ws) and operate at a high switching frequency up to 500 kHz. Frequency and slew rate are two of the most important factors of a voltage pulse, influencing the level of degradation of the insulation systems that are exposed to such voltage pulses. The paper reviews challenges concerning insulation degradation when benefitting from WBG-based conversion systems with the mentioned dv/dt and switching frequency values and identifies technical gaps and future research needs. The paper provides a framework for future research in dielectrics and electrical insulation design for systems under fast, repetitive voltage pluses originated by WBG-based conversion systems.

Accelerated insulation aging due to fast, repetitive voltages: A review identifying challenges and future research needs

The search for the optimum architecture for shipboard medium voltage dc integrated power systems must take into account the short-circuit protection in addition to overarching goals of efficiency, survivability, reliability of power, and cost effectiveness. Presently, accepted approaches to protection are “unit-based,” which means the power converter(s) feeding the bus coordinate with no-load electromechanical switches to isolate faulted portions of the bus. However, “breaker-based” approaches, which rely upon solid-state circuit breakers for fault mitigation, can result in higher reliability of power and potentially higher survivability. The inherent speed of operation of solid-state protective devices will also play a role in fault isolation, hence reducing stress level on all system components. A comparison study is performed of protective device topologies that are suitable for shipboard distribution systems rated between 4 and 30 kVdc from the perspectives of size and number of passive components required to manage the commutation energy during sudden fault events and packaging scalability to higher current and voltage systems. The implementation assumes a multichip silicon carbide (SiC) 10-kV, 240-A MOSFET/junction barrier Schottkey (JBS) diode module.

Power electronics building block (PEBB) concept is a platform-based approach where basic building blocks are consistent with one another, have a defined functionality & standardized hardware and control interfaces. Adoption of building block(s) that can be used for multiple applications, results in high volume production, reduced engineering effort; design testing, onsite installation and maintenance work. ONR has funded several universities and manufacturers to utilize PEBB concept for a broad range of applications. This paper describes the evolution of PEBB from concept to reality in marine and commercial applications
