Novel nanostructures for efficient photon upconversion and high-efficiency photovoltaics
TL;DR: In this paper, the upconversion quantum efficiency (UQE), photon energy sacrifice (PES), and absorption bandwidth (AB) metrics were defined and a design for new solid state up-conversion nanostructures that suppresses the dominant energy loss pathways and can enable substantial improvements in overall solar energy harvesting.

Christopher C. Milleville,Eric Y. Chen,Kyle R. Lennon,Jill M. Cleveland,Abinash Kumar,Jing Zhang,James Bork,Ansel Tessier,James M. LeBeau,D. Bruce Chase,Joshua M. O. Zide,Matthew F. Doty +11 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the principles of semiconductor heterostructure engineering can be applied to engineer improved upconversion efficiency by first eliminating electron trap states near the surface of the absorbing QD and then tailor the band gap of the NR such that charge carriers are funneled to the emitting QD.

Use of the drift-time method to measure the electron lifetime in long-drift-length CdZnTe detectors
Aleksey E. Bolotnikov,Giuseppe S. Camarda,Eric Y. Chen,R. Gul,V. Dedic,G. De Geronimo,Jack Fried,Anwar Hossain,J. Mackenzie,L. Ocampo,Paul J. Sellin,S. Taherion,Emerson Vernon,Ge Yang,Uri El-hanany,Ralph B. James +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the drift-time method was applied to measure the electron lifetime in long-drift-length (4 cm) standard-grade CZT detectors produced by the Redlen Technologies.

Upconversion of low-energy photons in semiconductor nanostructures for solar energy harvesting
Eric Y. Chen,Christopher C. Milleville,Joshua M. O. Zide,Matthew F. Doty,Jing Zhang +4 more
- 01 Dec 2018
TL;DR: In this article, the status of state-of-the-art upconverter materials in the context of improving solar cell performance is explored, focusing on semiconductor upconversion nanostructures that can harvest two separate bands of the solar spectrum and offer a promising path to rational engineering of improved performance and thus improved overall solar energy harvesting.
