Rapid Structure Determination of Microcrystalline Molecular Compounds Using Electron Diffraction.
Tim Gruene,Julian T. C. Wennmacher,Christian Zaubitzer,Julian J. Holstein,Jonas Heidler,Ariane Fecteau-Lefebvre,Sacha De Carlo,Elisabeth Müller,Kenneth N. Goldie,Irene Regeni,Teng Li,Gustavo Santiso-Quiñones,Gunther Steinfeld,Stephan Handschin,Eric van Genderen,Jeroen A. van Bokhoven,Jeroen A. van Bokhoven,Guido H. Clever,Radosav S. Pantelic +18 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that electron crystallography complements X‐ray crystallography and is the technique of choice for all unsolved cases in which submicrometer‐sized crystals were the limiting factor.

A Medipix quantum area detector allows rotation electron diffraction data collection from submicrometre three-dimensional protein crystals
TL;DR: An ultrasensitive Medipix2 detector allowed the collection of rotation electron-diffraction data from single three-dimensional protein nanocrystals for the first time.
Characterization at the Level of Individual Crystals: Single‐Crystal MFI Type Zeolite Grains
Tim Gruene,Teng Li,Eric van Genderen,Ana B. Pinar,Jeroen A. van Bokhoven,Jeroen A. van Bokhoven +5 more
TL;DR: Electron-diffraction data on the zeolites Silicalite-1 and ZSM-5 (both MFI framework type) showed that at the nanometre-scale, these zeolite crystals are single crystals and not intergrown.

Statistically correcting dynamical electron scattering improves the refinement of protein nanocrystals, including charge refinement of coordinated metals.
Thorsten B. Blum,Dominique Housset,Max T. B. Clabbers,Eric van Genderen,Maria Bacia-Verloop,Ulrich Zander,Andrew A. McCarthy,Guy Schoehn,Wai Li Ling,Jan Pieter Abrahams +9 more
TL;DR: A likelihood-based method is improved to correct for dynamical scattering in weakly diffracting protein nanocrystals and yielded better refinement statistics and structure interpretations, including charge estimations of bound ions.
Supramolecular architectures of molecularly thin yet robust free-standing layers
Mina Moradi,Mina Moradi,Nadia Opara,Nadia Opara,Ludovico G. Tulli,Christian Wäckerlin,Scott J. Dalgarno,Simon J. Teat,Milos Baljozovic,Olha Popova,Eric van Genderen,Armin Kleibert,Henning Stahlberg,Jan Pieter Abrahams,Jan Pieter Abrahams,Celestino Padeste,Philippe F.-X. Corvini,Thomas A. Jung,Patrick Shahgaldian +18 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that relatively weak noncovalent bonds of limited directionality such as dipole-dipole (–CN⋅ⓂⓉⓁNC–) interactions act in a synergistic fashion to stabilize crystalline monomolecular layers of tetrafunctional calixarenes, and the monolayers produced are demonstrated to be free-standing and display a well-defined atomic structure on the single-nanometer scale.
