An increasing number of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) molecular emitters has been developed in recent years and many of them are intended for applications in which high overall CPL efficiencies are required. In order to have a complete picture of the efficiency of a CPL emitter, dissymmetry factor (glum ) is not enough. In the following we propose a new quantity, named CPL brightness (BCPL ), which takes into account absorption extinction coefficient and quantum yield along with the glum factor. We calculated BCPL value for more than 180 compounds reported in the literature and we analyse data distribution for the main classes of CPL molecular emitters. This tool can be employed to put into context new CPL active compounds and to direct the choice of molecular systems for specific CPL applications.

Quantifying the Overall Efficiency of Circularly Polarized Emitters

Helicenes are promising candidates for chiral optoelectronic materials because of their helically twisted π-conjugated system. However, the emission intensity of unsubstituted helicenes is very weak (Φf < 0.05) due to a small oscillator strength for the S1 → S0 transition. In this work, we investigated the substitution position of the [7]helicene framework so that the S1 → S0 transition has a large transition magnetic dipole moment (TMDM) and is partially symmetry-allowed. A [7]helicene derivative thus designed showed a large fluorescence emission rate (kf = 0.02 ns-1) and a large TMDM for the S1 → S0 transition (|m| = 2.37 × 10-20 erg·Gauss-1), which are more than 10 times greater than those of unsubstituted [7]helicene (kf = 0.001 ns-1, |m| = 0.045 × 10-20 erg·Gauss-1). As a result, we achieved the [7]helicene derivative whose dissymmetry factor of CPL and fluorescence quantum yield were both high (|gCPL| = 1.3 × 10-2, Φf = 0.17) in the solution phase.

Tuning Transition Electric and Magnetic Dipole Moments: [7]Helicenes Showing Intense Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

While the development of chiral molecules displaying circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has received considerable attention, the corresponding CPL intensity,glum,hardly exceeds 10−2at the molecular level owing to the difficulty in optimizing the key parameters governing such a luminescence process. To address this challenge, we report here the synthesis and chiroptical properties of a new family of π-helical push-pull systems based on carbo[6]helicene, where the latter acts as either a chiral electron acceptor or a donor unit. This comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation shows that the magnitude and relative orientation of the electric (μe) and magnetic (μm) dipole transition moments can be tuned efficiently with regard to the molecular chiroptical properties, which results in highglumvalues,i.e.up to 3-4 × 10−2. Our investigations revealed that the optimized mutual orientation of the electric and magnetic dipoles in the excited state is a crucial parameter to achieve intense helicene-mediated exciton coupling, which is a major contributor to the obtained strong CPL. Finally, top-emission CP-OLEDs were fabricated through vapor deposition, which afforded a promisinggElof around 8 × 10−3. These results bring about further molecular design guidelines to reach high CPL intensity and offer new insights into the development of innovative CP-OLED architectures. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2021.

Achieving high circularly polarized luminescence with push–pull helicenic systems: from rationalized design to top-emission CP-OLED applications

We report the synthesis and characterization of a chiral, shape-persistent, perylene-diimide-based nanoribbon. Specifically, the fusion of three perylene-diimide monomers with intervening naphthalene subunits resulted in a helical superstructure with two [6]helicene subcomponents. This π-helix-of-helicenes exhibits very intense electronic circular dichroism, including one of the largest Cotton effects ever observed in the visible range. It also displays more than an order of magnitude increase in circular dichroism for select wavelengths relative to its smaller homologue. These impressive chiroptical properties underscore the potential of this new nanoribbon architecture in the context of chiral electronic materials.

A Helicene Nanoribbon with Greatly Amplified Chirality

pi-Helical push-pull dyes were prepared and their (chir)optical properties were investigated both experimentally and computationally. Specific fluorescent behaviour of bis-substituted system was observed with unprecedented solvent effect on the intensity of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL, dissymmetry factor decreasing from 10(-2) to 10(-3) with an increase in solvent polarity) that was linked to a change in symmetry of chiral excited state and suppression of interbranched exciton coupling. The results highlight the potential of CPL spectroscopy to study and provide a deeper understanding of electronic photophysical processes in chiral pi-conjugated molecules.

Modulation of circularly polarized luminescence through excited-state symmetry breaking and interbranched exciton coupling in helical push-pull organic systems.

The synthesis and chiroptical properties of a series of enantiomerically pure, C2 -symmetrical carbo[6]helicene dimers are reported. Two helicene cores are connected through a buta-1,3-diyne-1,4-diyl linker or a heteroaromatic bridge and bear arylethynyl substituents at their 15-positions. This ensures the possibility of extended electronic communication throughout the whole molecule. The new chromophores exhibit intense ECD spectra with strong bands in the UV/Vis region well above 400 nm. The anisotropy factor gabs (defined as Δϵ/ϵ) reaches values up to 0.047, which are unusually large for single organic molecules. They also display blue fluorescence, with good quantum yields (Φf ∼0.25). The emitted light is circularly polarized to an outstanding extent: in some cases, the luminescence dissymmetry factor glum =2(IL -IR )/(IL +IR ) attains values of |0.025|. To the best of our knowledge, such values are among the highest ever reported for non-aggregated organic fluorophores.

Helicene Monomers and Dimers: Chiral Chromophores Featuring Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

We report the synthesis of enantiomerically pure carbo[6]helicene oligomers with buta-1,3-diyne-1,4-diyl bridges between the helicene nuclei. The synthesis of monomeric (±)-2,15-bis[(triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl]carbo[6]helicene was achieved in 25 % yield over six steps. Pure (+)-(P)- and (−)-(M)-enantiomers were obtained by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase. The dimeric (+)-(P)2- and (−)-(M)2-configured and the tetrameric (+)-(P)4- and (−)-(M)4-configured oligomers were obtained by sequential oxidative acetylenic coupling. The ECD spectra of the tetrameric oligomers displayed large Cotton effect intensities of Δϵ=−851 m−1 cm−1 at λ=370 nm ((M)4-enantiomer). We transformed the buta-1,3-diyne-1,4-diyl bridge in the dimeric (P)2 and (M)2 oligomer by heteroaromatization into a thiene-2,5-diyl linker. Although the resulting chromophore showed reduced ECD intensities, it exhibited a remarkably strong fluorescence emission at 450–500 nm, with an absolute quantum yield of 25 %.
