Estrogen receptor gene disruption: molecular characterization and experimental and clinical phenotypes.
Kenneth S. Korach,John F. Couse,Sylvia W. Curtis,Todd F. Washburn,Jonathan Lindzey,Kimbro Ks,Edward M. Eddy,Silvia Migliaccio,S.M. Snedeker,Dennis B. Lubahn,David W. Schomberg,Eric P. Smith +11 more
TL;DR: Findings from the patient and mice suggest that the absence of functional ER is not lethal, and a single patient is described who is homozygous for a point mutation in the human ER gene at codon 157, which results in estrogen insensitivity syndrome.

Regulation of gastric emptying rate and its role in nutrient-induced GLP-1 secretion in rats after vertical sleeve gastrectomy
Adam P. Chambers,Eric P. Smith,Denovan P. Begg,Bernadette E. Grayson,Stephanie Sisley,Todd M. Greer,Joyce Sorrell,Lisa Lemmen,Kati LaSance,Stephen C. Woods,Randy J. Seeley,David A. D'Alessio,Darleen A. Sandoval +12 more
TL;DR: Findings demonstrate greatly accelerated gastric emptying in rat models of RYGB and VSG this is likely due to increased gastric pressure and reduced responses to inhibitory feedback from the intestine, and direct infusion of liquid nutrients into the duodenum caused significantly greater GLP-1 release in VSG compared with shams.

IMP dehydrogenase-2 drives aberrant nucleolar activity and promotes tumorigenesis in glioblastoma

TL;DR: The results reveal that upregulation of IMPDH2 is a prerequisite for the occurance of aberrant nucleolar function and increased anabolic processes in glioblastoma, which constitutes a primary event in gliomagenesis.
Mouse handling limits the impact of stress on metabolic endpoints.
Sriparna Ghosal,Amanda Nunley,Parinaz Mahbod,Alfor G. Lewis,Eric P. Smith,Jenny Tong,David A. D'Alessio,James P. Herman +7 more
TL;DR: Application of handling methods that reduce anxiety-like behaviors in mice mitigates the confounding contribution of stress to interpretation of metabolic endpoints (such as glucose tolerance).

Long-term outcomes in patients with obesity and renal disease after sleeve gastrectomy.
Al-Faraaz Kassam,Ahmad Mirza,Young Kim,Dennis J. Hanseman,E. Steve Woodle,Ralph C. Quillin,Bobby L. Johnson,Amit Govil,Michael Cardi,Daniel P. Schauer,Eric P. Smith,Tayyab S. Diwan +11 more
TL;DR: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy safely improves transplant candidacy while providing significant, sustainable effects on weight loss, reducing medical comorbidities, and possibly improving renal function in stage 3 patients.
