The controversy concerning the extent to which the organization of division of labor in social insects is a developmental process or is based on task allocation dynamics that emerge from colony need independent of worker age and endocrine or neural state has yet to be resolved. We present a novel analysis of temporal polyethism in the ant Pheidole dentata, demonstrating that task attendance by minor workers does not shift among spatially associated sets of behaviors that minimally overlap but rather expands with age. Our results show that the number of tasks performed by older minors increases through the addition and retention of behaviors, with up to a sixfold increase in repertoire size from day 1 to day 20 of adult life. We also show that older minors respond to colony needs by performing significantly more brood care as its demand increases, indicating that they can quickly upregulate nursing according to labor requirements. This level of plasticity was absent in younger siblings. The breadth of responsiveness to task-related olfactory stimuli increased with age. In a binary choice test in which young and old minor workers could orient toward odorants from brood or food, older workers responded to both brood and food, whereas young workers responded only to brood. These dissimilar responses to stimuli associated with nursing and foraging indicate age-related differences in sensory ability and provide a physiological basis for the age-related repertoire expansion model. We discuss repertoire expansion in P. dentata in light of behavioral development and caste flexibility in ants.

Age-related repertoire expansion and division of labor in Pheidole dentata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae): a new perspective on temporal polyethism and behavioral plasticity in ants

Birds evolved neural circuits of various complexities in relation to their capacity to produce learned or unlearned vocalizations. These vocalizations, in particular those that function in the realm of reproduction, are frequently sexually dimorphic, both in vocal learners (songbirds, parrots, some hummingbirds) and vocal nonlearners (all other birds). In many cases, the development and/or the adult differentiation of vocalizations of sociosexual function is sensitive to sex hormones, androgens and estrogens. The underlying mechanisms have been studied in detail in songbirds, a bird group that comprises about half of all bird species. Next to unlearned calls, songbirds produce learned songs that require forebrain vocal control areas that express receptors for androgens and estrogens. These forebrain vocal areas are sexually dimorphic in many species, but a clear relation between the degree of "brain sex" and sex differences in vocal pattern is lacking, except that a minimum number of vocal neurons is necessary to sing learned songs. Genetic brain-intrinsic mechanisms are likely to determine the neuron pools that develop into forebrain song control areas. Subsequently, gonadal steroid hormones, androgens and estrogens, modulate the fate of these neurons and thus the functionality of the vocal control systems. Further action of gonadal hormones, and may be other factors signaling the sociosexual and physical environment, affect the phenotype of vocal control areas in adulthood. Despite the clear evidence of hormone dependency of both adult vocalizations and phenotypes of vocal neuron pools, their causal relation is little understood.

The brains of some birds contain the most striking structural sex differences yet observed in any vertebrates. Birds are also famous for sex differences in behavior, including differences in sexual behavior and singing. Some of these differences result from a differential activation by sex steroids in adulthood. Other differences are due to long-lasting (permanent) organizational effects of estrogens secreted by the embryonic ovary. Finally, recent research demonstrates that a substantial number of genes are differentially expressed in the male and female brain and are likely responsible for sex differences in brain and behavior. This chapter reviews the different mechanisms that produce this diversity of sex differences in birds. A variety of avian behaviors are easily observable both in natural environments and in captivity. Multiple discoveries of general interest were made on birds and their behavior. Techniques for manipulating avian gene expression in vivo and even during ontogeny are currently being developed and it can thus be expected that in the relatively near future, direct manipulation of the avian genome will be routine so that avian species will remain, in the foreseeable future, the source of important discoveries that will affect major concepts in biology and even in biomedical sciences.

55 – Sexual Differentiation of Brain and Behavior in Birds

We show that the learned vocalizations of male and female large-billed crows (Corvus macrorhynchos) are similar and that their functions and physical features show significant differences from those of other oscine species. We investigate whether the song control nuclei of crows show any sexual differences in size, reflecting differences in their singing behavior, and whether these nuclei are different from those of other songbirds in terms of neural connectivity size and relative to the forebrain. Our Nissl staining results reveal that 1) of the four song nuclei examined (HVC; the robust nucleus of the arcopallium [RA]; Area X; and the dorsolateral medial nucleus [DLM]), HVC, RA, and Area X volumes are significantly larger in males than in females, but DLM volume and body and brain weights show no significant gender differences; and 2) the sizes of song nuclei relative to the forebrain are within the range of other oscines. By injecting a neural tract tracer (DiI) into various song nuclei in brain slices, we found that, as in other songbirds, HVC projects to RA and Area X, while Area X projects to the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior nidopallium (lMAN) and DLM, DLM to lMAN, and lMAN to RA. Our results indicate that, although the crow has songs very different from those of other oscine species, its song nuclei and the connections between them are not obviously different.
