This article proposes a framework to explore the nature, scope, and content of the evolving topic of Decision Support Systems (DSS). The first part of the framework considers (a) three levels of technology which have been designated DSS, (b) the developmental approach that is evolving for the creation of a DSS, and (c) the roles of several key types of people in the building and use of a DSS. The second part develops a descriptive model to access the performance objectives and the capabilities of a DSS as viewed by three of the major participants in their continued development and use. The final section outlines several issues in the future growth and development of a DSS as a potentially valuable type of information system in organizations.

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the evolution of management information systems (MIS). It also discusses the current status of this field. The chapter emphasizes on the development of MIS thought, the body of knowledge that exists through the performance of research, and the evolution of support mechanisms. MIS essentially deals with all informational and decision-making activity associated with operating an organization. In functional context, management information-decision systems are a blend of organizational theory, accounting, statistics, mathematical modeling, and economics, together with exposure to advanced computer hardware and software systems. This field is centered on expanding the horizons and integrating the decisions of organizations, both public and private, that must operate within the dynamics and functional demands imposed by their organizational size and degree of complexity. The chapter considers a historical approach that emphasizes on the academic and professional development of the MIS area. Decision support for management is very important to MIS.

Management Information Systems: Evolution and Status

Institutions of higher learning are growing increasingly interested in the use of model-based approaches to their resource allocation problems. Recent modeling approaches, however, have failed to consider that resource allocation planning is not a well-structured decision process. Additionally, many decision makers are necessarily involved in the academic planning process and may assume dissimilar perspectives on the importance of achieving different goals and objectives. Furthermore, satisfactory allocation solutions can be expected to vary considerably from decision maker to decision maker as the individual's cognitive processes, perceptions, and evaluations are taken into consideration.



This paper describes a decision support system (DSS) approach that attempts to adapt to a variety of academic decision makers with differing planning views in an environment of multiple conflicting objectives. This DSS, which was successfully tested on four academic decision makers in a large midwestern university, shows considerable promise for providing decision support to decision makers with varied problem-solving styles.

Although high payoffs from interactive problem-solving systems have been predicted, few such systems are in use. A key problem is the lack of understanding of the requirements of the potential users. This paper presents the results of case studies of the use of an interactive problem-solving system. Based on observations from these case studies, a list of user characteristics have been compiled relating to user behavior (e.g., data user and problem solving methods) and user requirements (e.g., the need for involvement in the solution process).
