Establishment of a cryopreserved gene bank of European elms
TL;DR: Tests showed that direct regrowth of cryopreserved buds of Ulmus minor and Ulmus laevis was possible; conversely, Ulmus glabra could only be regrown through micrografting, and most thawed explants from all 26 clones survived through the whole cultivation phase and were successfully transferred to the field.

Molecular markers and ex situ conservation of the European elms (Ulmus spp.)
W. P. Goodall-Copestake,Michelle L. Hollingsworth,Peter M. Hollingsworth,Gareth I. Jenkins,Eric Collin +4 more
TL;DR: The molecular data served to highlight mis-identified samples and led to extensive revisions of sample identities within individual countries, but were less useful in detecting regional intra-specific genetic structure, and do not provide sufficient information for prioritising within-species sample selections.

Methods and progress in the conservation of elm genetic resources in Europe

Interspecific hybridisation and interaction with cultivars affect the genetic variation of Ulmus minor and Ulmus glabra in Flanders
Karen Cox,An Vanden Broeck,Kristine Vander Mijnsbrugge,Joukje Buiteveld,Eric Collin,Hans M. Heybroek,Joachim Mergeay +6 more
TL;DR: It is conceivable that reproductive material has been moved around extensively, obscuring the natural genetic structure of the elm populations, and the results help guide the Flemish elm genetic resources conservation programme.
Human impact on the genetic diversity of Dutch field elm (Ulmus minor) populations in the Netherlands: implications for conservation
TL;DR: High levels of clonality and patterns of genetic variability within and among field elm populations in the Netherlands help facilitate Dutch gene conservation management programs for U. minor, in particular the identification of high priority clones for ex situ conservation and efforts to restore remnant populations and hedgerows.
