This paper reviews x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies on carbon nitride (CN) and reports on results obtained from CN thin films prepared by mass selected ion-beam deposition. The core-level spectra of samples deposited at room temperature show that nitrogen is incorporated into the amorphous network in two different bonding configurations; carbon has three main bonding configurations whose relative contributions vary as a function of the nitrogen content. For samples deposited at elevated temperatures an ordering of the amorphous CN network towards a crystalline graphitelike structure is observed. Furthermore, both deposition at elevated temperatures (350 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C) and post-deposition ion irradiation have a strong influence on the bonding configuration in the CN films. Based on these results and the results reported in the reviewed literature a picture of the microstructure of carbon nitride deposited using energetic species is developed.

Further insight into processing-structure-property relationships have been carried out for existing and candidate carbon-based protective overcoats used in the magnetic recording industry Specifically, 5 nm thick amorphous diamond-like carbon (a:C) and nitrogenated diamond-like carbon (a:CNx) overcoats were deposited by low deposition rate sputtering onto a thin film disk consisting of either CoCrPt/CrV/NiP/AlMg or CoCrPt/CrV/glass The wear durability and frictional behavior of these hard disks were ascertained using a recently developed depth sensing reciprocating nanoscratch test It was determined that the CN014/CoCrPt/CrV/glass disk exhibited the most wear resistance, least amount of plastic deformation, and lowest kinetic friction coefficient after the last wear event Core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results of sputter cleaned overcoats indicated that nitrogen up to 14 at % incorporated into the amorphous network resulted in these improvements near the overcoat/magnetic layer in

Structural and tribological characterization of protective amorphous diamond-like carbon and amorphous CNx overcoats for next generation hard disks

An ab initio based tight-binding molecular-dynamics method is used to generate 60 amorphous carbon nitride structures, $a$-CN, with various stoichiometries and densities, providing the first atomic level insight into the chemical bonding properties of these materials. Focusing on high densities, we observe clear trends counteracting the formation of a low-compressibility phase: (i) N incorporation strongly catalyzes C undercoordination, which in turn (ii) causes the nitrogens to develop paracyanogenlike (CN double and triple) bonding, and (iii) the most favorable densities for $a$-CN occur much lower than the desired hard crystalline ones.
