Encapsulation of plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria—prospects and potential in agricultural sector: a review

Globally, the availability of phosphorus (P) to crops remains limited in two-thirds of the soils, which makes it less accessible to plants and ultimately associated with low crop yields. The present study investigated the effect of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB; Pseudomonas spp.) for the improvement of phosphorus in mung bean (Vigna radiata) varieties and growth of net grain and biological yields. Results showed that inoculation of mung bean varieties with PSB at the rate of 100 g/kg seed significantly improved the root and shoot dry weight of about 1.13 and 12.66 g, root and shoot length of 14.49 and 50.63 cm, root and shoot phosphorus content of 2629.39 and 4138.91 mg/kg, a biological yield of 9844.41 kg/ha, number of pods of 17 per plant, number of grains of 9 per pod, grain yield of 882.23 kg/ha, and 1000-grain weight of 46.18 g after 60 days of observation. It was also observed that PSB-treated varieties of mung bean showed the maximum photosynthetic yield, photosynthetic active radiation, electron transport rate, and momentary fluorescent rate of 0.75, 364.32, 96.12, and 365.33 μmol/m2 s, respectively. The highest harvest index of 13.28% was recorded by P-treated mung beans. Results disclosed that inoculation of seeds of mung bean with PSB exhibited different effects in measured parameters. It is concluded that PSB possessed remarkable results in measured parameters compared to the control and highlighted that PSB could be an effective natural sustainable fertilizer for mung bean cultivation in sandy soil.

Comparative Effect of Inoculation of Phosphorus-Solubilizing Bacteria and Phosphorus as Sustainable Fertilizer on Yield and Quality of Mung Bean (Vigna radiata L.).

Low-cost and environmentally friendly agricultural practices have received increasing attention in recent years. Developing microbial inoculants containing phosphate (P) solubilizing bacteria (PSB) represents an emerging biological solution to improve rhizosphere P availability. The present study aims to explore PSB strains isolated from soils located at different bioclimatic stages in Morocco and present in various legumes rhizosphere to improve agronomic microbial fertilizer’s effectiveness. It was also aimed to test the isolated strains for their ability to solubilize P in NBRIP medium with Tricalcium P (Ca3 (PO4)2) (TCP), rock phosphate (RP), and their combination as a source of phosphorus, by (22) experiment design. Bacterial strains with a high P solubility index (PSI) were selected, characterized, and compared to commercial control. The vanadate-molybdate method was used to estimate P solubilization activity. Stress tolerance to salinity, acidity, drought, and temperature was tested. From all isolated strains (64), 12 were screened as promising biotechnological interest because of their P solubilization and their good resistance to different drastic conditions. Besides, the strain WJEF15 showed the most P solubility efficiency in NBRIP solid medium with a PSI of 4.1; while the WJEF61 strain was located as the most efficient strain in NBRIP-TCP liquid medium by releasing 147.62 mg.l–1 of soluble P. In contrast, in the NBRIP-RP medium, the strain WJEF15 presented maximum solubilization with 25.16 mg.l–1. The experiment design showed that a combination of RP and TCP with max level progressively increases P solubilization by 20.58%, while the WJEF63 strain has the most efficient concentration of 102.69 mg.l–1. Indeed, among the selected strains, four strains were able to limit tested fungi growth. Thus, results reveal a potential effect of selecting PSBs to support cropping cultures as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR).

Isolation and characterization of phosphate solubilizing bacteria naturally colonizing legumes rhizosphere in Morocco

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of nine plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) alone or in combination on maize seed germination and seedling growth under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The germination and growth tests were carried out in square petri dishes and pots. Maize seeds were inoculated with suspension of 108 CFU/ml of rhizobacteria. The experimental device was a random block of 16 treatments with four repetitions. Germination test results showed that seeds inoculated with PGPR including the control induced good germination in the range of 93.75% to 100%. The vigor index and root length of the seeds treated with Bacillus panthothenicus were significantly improved by 76.64% and 58.86%, respectively, while the maximal lengths of the seedlings were obtained with Pseudomonas cichorii with an increase of 118.95%. In greenhouse experience, data demonstrated that Serratia marcescens better improved the leaf area, height and underground biomass, respectively by 58.83%, 108.43%, and 59.16% as compared to the control. The highest fresh aerial biomass and air dry matter was obtained with plants treated only with Pseudomonas putida. These results show the potential to use such rhizobacteria as biofertilizers to improve maize productivity in Benin.

Influence of Isolated PGPR Rhizobacteria in Central and Northern Benin on Maize Germination and Greenhouse Growth

Sustainable agriculture symbolizes accomplished utilization of natural resources while ensuring the well-being of natural environment. It integrates the goals of environmental preservation, economic growth, and socioeconomic equality. For sustainable development of the human world, sustainable agriculture is the need of the hour. The broad application of microbes in sustainable agriculture is due to the genetic dependency of plants on the beneficial functions provided by symbiotic microbes. They can play instrumental role in transforming conventional agriculture to the sustainable one. Diverse microbial communities are symbiotically associated with plants as endophytes and epiphytes and rhizospheric communities. Structural as well as functional diversity exists among these communities. For the better understanding and positive exploitation of such communities in sustainable agriculture, it is inevitable to study each community individually. In the present chapter, the importance of rhizospheric communities, which can also be called as the rhizomicrobiome, has been addressed. Rhizosphere is the area around plant roots influenced by root exudates. It is a complex system in terms of chemical, biological, as well as physical properties. Plant–microbe interactions in the rhizosphere involve diverse relationships including plant growth promotion, plant protection, pathogenesis, competition, etc. Rhizospheric microbes are involved in the biogeochemical cycling of organic matter as well as mineral nutrients. Microbe-based growth promotion in plants could provide effective ways of developing sustainable agriculture in order to ensure human and animal food production with a minimal disturbance of the environment.

Unfolding the Role of Rhizomicrobiome Toward Sustainable Agriculture

Application of chemical fertilizers besides economic concerns has been a reason of environmental and ecosystem degradation, so sustainable organic agriculture is becoming popular in researches and among farming communities. Phosphorus holds second position after nitrogen among macronutrients required for better plant growth and is needed in higher amounts. Meeting this high phosphorus input for better crop yields causes environmental problems like eutrophication, so phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are being emphasized to utilize phosphorus fixed in soil layers. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of PSB on plant growth, soil biological properties including enzymes and soil respiration. Treatments including control, 50 mg kg -1 nitrogen, 50 mg kg -1 nitrogen and 12 mg kg -1 phosphorus applications reduced dosage of nitrogen 25 mg kg -1 with PGPR and 25 mg kg -1 nitrogen along with 0.12 g raw phosphate and PGPR. Results indicated that plant parameters like above and below ground plant biomasses (fresh and dry weight), plant nitrogen and phosphorus content were significantly enhanced in all the treatments when compared with the control. While soil pH in rhizosphere significantly increased with the treatments, bulk soil pH decreased with PGPR treatments when compared with all other treatments. EC values in rhizosphere and bulk soils were not significantly influenced with the treatments. Rhizospheric and bulk soil showed high amount of N, P and organic matter in PGPR treatments. Alkaline phosphatase and β-glucosidase activities were found significantly higher in the last treatment than the other treatments. Basal soil respiration was interestingly found higher in control soil but did not differ statistically from the other treatments. Concluding, application of PGPR with lower amounts of chemical fertilizers can reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and has also potential of improving soil health in long term aspects.
