Effects of Telmisartan Added to Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors on Mortality and Morbidity in Hemodialysis Patients With Chronic Heart Failure : A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial
Gennaro Cice,Attilio Di Benedetto,Salvatore D'Isa,Antonello D'Andrea,Daniele Marcelli,Emanuele Gatti,Raffaele Calabrò +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a 3-year randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial was performed involving 30 Italian clinics to determine whether telmisartan decreases all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in hemodialysis patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and impaired left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).

Optimization of anemia treatment in hemodialysis patients via reinforcement learning.
Pablo Escandell-Montero,Milena Chermisi,José M. Martínez-Martínez,Juan Gómez-Sanchis,Carlo Barbieri,Emilio Soria-Olivas,Flavio Mari,Joan Vila-Francés,Andrea Stopper,Emanuele Gatti,José D. Martín-Guerrero +10 more
TL;DR: Promising results demonstrate the potential of RL to become an alternative to current protocols, and the RL algorithm employed in the proposed methodology is fitted Q iteration, which stands out for its ability to make an efficient use of data.

A new machine learning approach for predicting the response to anemia treatment in a large cohort of End Stage Renal Disease patients undergoing dialysis
Carlo Barbieri,Flavio Mari,Andrea Stopper,Emanuele Gatti,Pablo Escandell-Montero,José M. Martínez-Martínez,José D. Martín-Guerrero +6 more
TL;DR: The ML model makes use of both human physiology and drug pharmacology to produce a model that outperforms previous approaches, yielding Mean Absolute Errors (MAE) of the Hemoglobin (Hb) prediction around or lower than 0.6 g/dl in the three countries analyzed in the study, namely, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

EuCliD (European Clinical Database): a database comparing different realities.
Daniele Marcelli,J. Kirchgessner,Claudia Amato,H. Steil,A. Mitteregger,Moscardò,C. Carioni,Giancarlo Orlandini,Emanuele Gatti +8 more
TL;DR: FMC has put the patient care at the centre of its activities for many years and now is able to provide transparency to the community (Authorities, Nephrologists, Patients.....) thus demonstrating the quality of the service.

Impact of hemodialysis therapy on anemia of chronic kidney disease: the potential mechanisms.
Sudhir K. Bowry,Emanuele Gatti +1 more
TL;DR: Assessment indicates that OL-HDF favorably impacts anemia by not only eliminating putative uremic inhibitors that suppress erythropoiesis, reducing red cell destruction and increasing iron availability, but also by mechanisms restricting underlying inflammation and endothelial dysfunction that are crucial to both CKD and anemia.
