Suicide is a leading cause of death that demands cross-disciplinary research efforts to develop and deploy suicide risk screening tools. Such tools, partly informed by influential suicide theories, can help identify individuals at the greatest risk of suicide and should be able to predict the transition from suicidal thoughts to suicide attempts. Advances in artificial intelligence have revolutionized the development of suicide screening tools and suicide risk detection systems. Thus, various types of AI systems, including text-based systems, have been proposed to identify individuals at risk of suicide. Although these systems have shown acceptable performance, most of them have not incorporated suicide theories in their design. Furthermore, directly applying suicide theories may be difficult because of the diversity and complexity of these theories. To address these challenges, we propose an approach to develop speech- and language-based suicide risk detection systems. We highlight the promise of establishing a benchmark textual and vocal dataset using a standardized speech and language assessment procedure, and research designs that distinguish between the risk factors for suicide attempt above and beyond those for suicidal ideation alone. The benchmark dataset could be used to develop trustworthy machine learning or deep learning-based suicide risk detection systems, ultimately constructing a foundation for vocal and textual-based suicide risk detection systems. 

Suicide risk detection using artificial intelligence: the promise of creating a benchmark dataset for research on the detection of suicide risk

This article presents an ecostylistic analysis of selected extracts from Michael Punke’s novel The Revenant (2002). The aims of the study are achieved in terms of an eclectic methodological framework. The study aims at revealing the power hierarchy created in the selected texts between human and non-human participants. Also, it aims to show how the elements of nature affect the survival of humans in the fictional context by identifying the ecostylistic features in the literary text. A close ecostylistic reading of six selected extracts from the novel using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) tools (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014[1985]) and Zurru’s (2017) approach is followed. Moreover, the study presents a qualitative investigation of stylistic elements such as foregrounded features and deviated language patterns. Thus, conducting an ecostylistic analysis of the chosen passages, and, demonstrating how the author portrays the environment with all its elements as an effective participant helps to appreciate nature. The findings show that nature acts as the main character’s savior and a threat to his life; it also demonstrates how nature works as a powerful active participant in portraying the events of the novel.

Cancer is one of the critical health concerns. Health authorities around the world have devoted great attention to cancer and cancer causing factors to achieve control against the increasing rate of cancer. Carcinogens are the most salient factors that are accused of causing a considerable rate of cancer cases. Scientists, in different fields of knowledge, keep warning people of the imminent attack of carcinogens which are surrounding people in the environment and may launch their attack at any moment. The present paper aims to investigate the linguistic construction of the imminent carcinogen attack in English and Arabic scientific discourse. Such an investigation contributes to enhancing the scientists’ awareness of the linguistic conduct they follow in attracting people’s attention towards the risk of the approaching attack. The linguistic awareness also helps maintain better promotion of people’s pre-emptive responses that can reduce the potential for cancer cases. To achieve this aim, the paper adopts dual methodological procedures of qualitative and quantitative analyses. Cap’s (2013) proximization theory of threat and crisis construction is adopted for both qualitative and quantitative procedures. The mathematical calculations and statistical results for discourses in both languages are maintained by corpus linguistic analysis using Anthony’s (2019) software, AntConc. The paper has come up to certain conclusions that shed light on the similarities and differences in the construction of the imminent carcinogen attack in both languages. English scientific discourse has shown more reliance on temporal proximization to envisage the imminent attack of carcinogens against human bodies. Categories 1, 2, 3 and 5 are all more dominant in the English scientific discourse. However, both English and Arabic discourses show diversity in the density and employment of the lexico- grammatical tools (categories) that manifest the carcinogen attack.

The article reveals the essence of a suicide note as an object of forensic authorship examination conducted in order to make a psycholinguistic profile of the author of the text based on his appearance characteristics (age, gender, professional affiliation, etc.). The importance of such examination in the investigation of murders is underlined, when it is required to reveal the fact of staging a murder as a suicide, when the text of the suicide note is one of the evidence sources in covering the crime up. The author points out that both the texts of "false" suicide notes and the texts of originate suicide notes have their own psycholinguistic features (structural, grammatical, morphological, etc.) that make it possible to sketch the writer’s speech profile. The research reveals that the text of a suicide note is written by a person in order to verbalize his emotional experiences in a certain depressive state. It should be noted that earlier the text of a suicide note was made by hand and it had a personal addressee, the main research methods were mainly cognitive. Currently, due to the development of Internet communication, linguostatistical methods are increasingly used. That permits to make a human profile based on a set of quantitative features in the text of a short electronic message published in the open access and having an interpersonal addressee.

Forensic authorship examination of suicide notes

This study aims at shedding light on the linguistic significance of collocation networks in the academic writing context. Following Firth’s principle “You shall know a word by the company it keeps.” The study intends to examine three selected nodes (i.e. research, study, and paper) shared collocations in an academic context. This is achieved by using the corpus linguistic tool; GraphColl in #LancsBox software version 5 which was announced in June 2020 in analyzing selected nodes. The study focuses on academic writing of two corpora which were designed and collected especially to serve the purpose of the study. The corpora consist of a collection of abstracts extracted from two different academic journals that publish for writers from different countries around the world. This corpus-based study aims at examining the significance of chunks of language in texts. The concept of collocations is crucial in corpus linguistics to identify semantic relations. This can help in the teaching and learning processes. Furthermore, this study is conducted to answer the following research questions; first, whether the three words study, paper, and research are used interchangeably in the corpora or not? Second, what are the shared collocational associations surrounding the selected nodes? Finally, it is worth noting that the study of collocations highlights the linguistic features of texts through computational analytical tools that can save time and help to gain objective results systematically. The findings show that ‘research’ and ‘study’ are used rather interchangeably in the writing of the abstracts; however, ‘paper’ has fewer shared collocations in the same academic context.

Collocation Networks of Selected Words in Academic Writing: A Corpus-Based Study

Abstract This study examines the stylistic linguistic features of a collection of suicide notes retrieved from the online platform Reddit from the period (2012–2020). It aims to conduct a detailed corpus-based stylistic analysis. Furthermore, it aims at checking specific selected stylistic categories. The quantitative analysis was performed using WordSmith 8.0 software which helps to identify keywords in context. Keywords are indicators of the style of the language of the selected corpus. The analysis result indicated that the redditors in the online suicide corpus usually included simple words with fairly short sentences. Their writings tend to be less lexically diverse, concentrating on one or two themes with a lower TTR (type-token ratio), which indicated that their words were relatively repetitive. Online suicide notes show high frequency in using first-person singular pronouns, and concerning the distribution of content words, the verbs were the most frequently used part of speech, followed by nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Furthermore, the keywords list helps to reveal stylistic and linguistic elements.
