Cooperativity in Noncovalent Interactions.

There is great need for stand-alone luminescence-based chemosensors that exemplify selectivity, sensitivity, and applicability and that overcome the challenges that arise from complex, real-world media. Discussed herein are recent developments toward these goals in the field of supramolecular luminescent chemosensors, including macrocycles, polymers, and nanomaterials. Specific focus is placed on the development of new macrocycle hosts since 2010, coupled with considerations of the underlying principles of supramolecular chemistry as well as analytes of interest and common luminophores. State-of-the-art developments in the fields of polymer and nanomaterial sensors are also examined, and some remaining unsolved challenges in the area of chemosensors are discussed.

Supramolecular Luminescent Sensors

Driven by the inherent synthetic potential of CO2 as an abundant, inexpensive and renewable C1 chemical feedstock, the recent years have witnessed renewed interest in devising catalytic CO2 fixations into organic matter. Although the formation of C-C bonds via catalytic CO2 fixation remained rather limited for a long period of time, a close look into the recent literature data indicates that catalytic carboxylation reactions have entered a new era of exponential growth, evolving into a mature discipline that allows for streamlining the synthesis of carboxylic acids, building blocks of utmost relevance in industrial endeavors. These strategies have generally proven broadly applicability and convenient to perform. However, substantial challenges still need to be addressed reinforcing the need to cover metal-catalyzed carboxylation area in a conceptual and concise manner, delineating the underlying new principles that are slowly emerging in this vibrant area of expertise.

Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Carboxylation Reactions with Carbon Dioxide.

Metal-catalyzed reductive coupling has emerged as an alternative to the use of stoichiometric organometallic reagents in an increasingly diverse range of carbonyl and imine additions. In this review, the use of diene, allene, and enyne pronucleophiles in intermolecular carbonyl and imine reductive couplings are surveyed, along with related hydrogen autotransfer processes.

Intermolecular Metal-Catalyzed Reductive Coupling of Dienes, Allenes, and Enynes with Carbonyl Compounds and Imines.

This review summarizes research directed towards the formation of carbocyclic adducts from donor–acceptor cyclopropanes. The focus of the review is on annulation and cycloaddition reactions (both inter- and intramolecularly) mediated by Lewis or protic acid, bases, or thermal conditions. Rearrangements resulting in carbocycles and those reactions mediated by transition metal catalysis have been excluded.

A catalytic hydroamidation of alkynes with isocyanates using alkyl bromides as hydride sources has been developed. The method turns parasitic β-hydride elimination into a strategic advantage, rapidly affording acrylamides with excellent chemo- and regioselectivity.

Alkyl Bromides as Mild Hydride Sources in Ni-Catalyzed Hydroamidation of Alkynes with Isocyanates

(Carbo) nucleoside derivatives constitute an important class of pharmaceuticals, yet there are only few convergent methods to access new analogues. Here, we report the first synthesis of thymine-, uracil-, and 5-fluorouracil-substituted diester donor-acceptor cyclopropanes and their use in the indium-and tin-catalyzed [3+2] annulations with aldehydes, ketones, and enol ethers. The obtained diester products could be easily decarboxylated and reduced to the corresponding alcohols. The method gives access to a broad range of new (carbo) nucleoside analogues in only four or five steps and will be highly useful for the synthesis of libraries of bioactive compounds.

Synthesis of (Carbo)nucleoside Analogues by [3+2] Annulation of Aminocyclopropanes†

A user-friendly, nickel-catalyzed reductive amidation of unactivated primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl bromides with isocyanates is described. This catalytic strategy offers an efficient synthesis of a wide range of aliphatic amides under mild conditions and with an excellent chemoselectivity profile while avoiding the use of stoichiometric and sensitive organometallic reagents.
