An MRI time course of 512 echo-planar images (EPI) in resting human brain obtained every 250 ms reveals fluctuations in signal intensity in each pixel that have a physiologic origin. Regions of the sensorimotor cortex that were activated secondary to hand movement were identified using functional MRI methodology (FMRI). Time courses of low frequency (< 0.1 Hz) fluctuations in resting brain were observed to have a high degree of temporal correlation (P < 10(-3)) within these regions and also with time courses in several other regions that can be associated with motor function. It is concluded that correlation of low frequency fluctuations, which may arise from fluctuations in blood oxygenation or flow, is a manifestation of functional connectivity of the brain.

The influence of pH on the relative importance of the two principal decomposer groups in soil, fungi and bacteria, was investigated along a continuous soil pH gradient at Hoosfield acid strip at Rothamsted Research in the United Kingdom. This experimental location provides a uniform pH gradient, ranging from pH 8.3 to 4.0, within 180 m in a silty loam soil on which barley has been continuously grown for more than 100 years. We estimated the importance of fungi and bacteria directly by measuring acetate incorporation into ergosterol to measure fungal growth and leucine and thymidine incorporation to measure bacterial growth. The growth-based measurements revealed a fivefold decrease in bacterial growth and a fivefold increase in fungal growth with lower pH. This resulted in an approximately 30-fold increase in fungal importance, as indicated by the fungal growth/bacterial growth ratio, from pH 8.3 to pH 4.5. In contrast, corresponding effects on biomass markers for fungi (ergosterol and phospholipid fatty acid [PLFA] 18:2ω6,9) and bacteria (bacterial PLFAs) showed only a two- to threefold difference in fungal importance in the same pH interval. The shift in fungal and bacterial importance along the pH gradient decreased the total carbon mineralization, measured as basal respiration, by only about one-third, possibly suggesting functional redundancy. Below pH 4.5 there was universal inhibition of all microbial variables, probably derived from increased inhibitory effects due to release of free aluminum or decreasing plant productivity. To investigate decomposer group importance, growth measurements provided significantly increased sensitivity compared with biomass-based measurements.

Contrasting Soil pH Effects on Fungal and Bacterial Growth Suggest Functional Redundancy in Carbon Mineralization

The minute photosynthetic prokaryote Prochlorococcus, which was discovered about 10 years ago, has proven exceptional from several standpoints. Its tiny size (0.5 to 0.7 μm in diameter) makes it the smallest known photosynthetic organism. Its ubiquity within the 40°S to 40°N latitudinal band of oceans and its occurrence at high density from the surface down to depths of 200 m make it presumably the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth. Prochlorococcus typically divides once a day in the subsurface layer of oligotrophic areas, where it dominates the photosynthetic biomass. It also possesses a remarkable pigment complement which includes divinyl derivatives of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and Chl b, the so-called Chl a2 and Chl b2, and, in some strains, small amounts of a new type of phycoerythrin. Phylogenetically, Prochlorococcus has also proven fascinating. Recent studies suggest that it evolved from an ancestral cyanobacterium by reducing its cell and genome sizes and by recruiting a protein originally synthesized under conditions of iron depletion to build a reduced antenna system as a replacement for large phycobilisomes. Environmental constraints clearly played a predominant role in Prochlorococcus evolution. Its tiny size is an advantage for its adaptation to nutrient-deprived environments. Furthermore, genetically distinct ecotypes, with different antenna systems and ecophysiological characteristics, are present at depth and in surface waters. This vertical species variation has allowed Prochlorococcus to adapt to the natural light gradient occurring in the upper layer of oceans. The present review critically assesses the basic knowledge acquired about Prochlorococcus both in the ocean and in the laboratory.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~Number 6 Abstract Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) measurements and contemporaneous measurements of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phytoplankton nutrient deficiency have been made across a broad range of lakes and ocean sites using common methods. The ocean environment was nutrient rich in terms of TN and TP when compared with most lakes in the study, although Lake Victoria had the highest values of TN and TP. TN concentrations in lakes rose rapidly with TP concentrations, from low values to TN concentrations that are similar to those associated with the ocean sites. In contrast, the TN concentrations in the oceans were relatively homogeneous and independent of TP concentrations. The hyperbolic shape of the TN: TP relationship created a broad range of TN: TP values for both lakes and oceans. The TN: TP ratios of the surface ocean sites were usually well in excess of the Redfield ratio that is noted in the deep ocean. Phytoplankton biomass, as indicated by Chl a, was strongly dependent upon TP in the lakes, and there was a weaker relationship with TN. Oceanic Chl a values showed a positive relationship with TP, but at much higher TP values than were observed in the lakes; there was no relation with TN. P-deficient phytoplankton growth was inferred using independent indicators when TP was 50 (molar). At intermediate TN TP ratios, either N or P can become deficient. We conclude that N or P limitation of algal growth is a product of the TN and TP concentration and the TN: TP ratio rather than a product of whether the system of study is marine or freshwater.

Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and nutrient limitation in lakes and oceans: Is there a common relationship?

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element to all life, being a structural and functional component of all organisms.1-4 P provides the phosphate-ester backbone of DNA and RNA, and it is crucial in the transmission of chemical energy through the ATP molecule (Figure 1). P is also a structural constituent in many cell components such as phosphoproteins, and phospholipids in cell membranes, teeth, and bones (Figure 1). In some organisms it can also be present as intracellular polyphosphate storage granules (Figure 1). Phosphorus availability can impact primary production rates in the ocean as well as species distribution and ecosystem structure.5-8 In some marine and estuarine environments, P availability is considered the proximal macronutrient that limits primary production.8,9 Specifically, in recent years it has been recognized that phosphorus limitation in the ocean may be more prevalent than previously thought. For example, it is generally accepted that orthophosphate (PO4) is the limiting nutrient in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.10-12 In addition, phosphate is suspected to play an important role in limiting production in the Sargasso Sea13 and may also be limiting in bodies of water receiving large freshwater inputs or fertilizer runoff from agriculture, as in the Chesapeake Bay.14,15 Furthermore, research in the Pacific Ocean gyres indicates that biological P uptake rates far surpass the combined input from atmospheric and deep water sources, suggesting that P is efficiently recycled within oligotrophic euphotic zones.16 It has also been suggested that transitions over the last two decades from nitrogen (N) limitation to P limitation have taken place in the North Pacific subtropical gyre and that this may be responsible for the observed succession of prokaryotic picophytoplankton such as Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus in oligotrophic waters.6 In other marine environments, P may only be limiting a subset of organisms within the ecosystem.17-19 Phosphorus, in the form of orthophosphate, plays a key role in photosynthesis (i.e., primary productivity). Oceanic central gyres cover large areas of the earth and contribute significantly to global productivity. Oceanic phytoplankton production is believed to be Limited by nitrogen (N) in central gyres and iron (Fe) in high-nutrient low-chlorophyll regions. Bacterioplankton have been less studied but are believed to be limited by organic carbon. We report here that bacterioplankton in the Sargasso Sea were phosphorus (P) limited on cruises in 1992 and 1993. This assertion is supported by measurements of high dissolved and particulate N:P and C:P ratios, high alkaline phosphatase activity and phosphate uptake rates, and bacterioplankton growth rate responses In bioassays where inorganic P was added. Particulate C:P ratios were always higher than the Redfield ratio (106:l) and occasionally greater than 400:l. N:P ratios were 75:l and 46:l on 2 cruises and tlme-series data indicated that ratios were always greater than 24:l over nearly a 2 yr span. Phosphate concentrations were extremely low in the euphotic zone (< 10 nM) and biomass-normalized alkaline phosphatase activities indicated moderate to severe P limitation, with most severe lunitation occurring in the spring. Bioassays indicated that heterotrophic bacteria may be P limited in the northwestern Sargasso Sea, especially in the spring. Limitation by P and not dissolved organic carbon may explain why dissolved organic carbon accumulates in the water column at that time.
