People like me increasing likelihood of success for underrepresented minorities in STEM by providing realistic and relatable role models
Nir Aish,Philip Asare,Elif Miskioglu +2 more
- 01 Oct 2017
TL;DR: This work identifies a set of role models who represent more feasible paths to success for many underrepresented students and finds that non-outliers do exhibit the qualities the authors' student sample pool seeks in role models.
Nurses, Managers, and Engineers – Oh My! Disciplinary Perceptions of Intuition and Its Role in Expertise Development
Caitlyn Aaron,Elif Miskioglu,Kaela M. Martin,Brooke M. Shannon,Adam R. Carberry +4 more
- 21 Oct 2020
TL;DR: This work uses theories of expertise development and dual-cognitive processing frameworks to provide a theoretical grounding to define discipline-specific intuition and hypothesize that intuition can be observed in disciplinary experts through discussions of experience and decision-making processes.

Situating intuition in engineering practice
Elif Miskioglu,Cai Qingwei Aaron,C.E.R. Bolton,Kaela M. Martin,Madeline Roth,Sanjeev M. Kavale,Adam Carberry +6 more
TL;DR: A defining characteristic of expertise is the use of intuition to navigate tasks as mentioned in this paper , but little is known about how it translates to engineering, and existing literature on intuition does not clearly define the construct and its relationship to problem solving, creating a substantial gap in our understanding of intuition and its applicability to engineering.
