Comprehensive handbook of psychological assessment

Using path analysis and hierarchical linear modeling, the authors evaluated the associations between both partners' level of depression and anxiety, as measured by Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) content scales, and both partners' level of marital satisfaction among married couples (N = 774) that participated in the MMPI restandardization study (J. N. Butcher. W. G. Dahlstrom, J. R. Graham, A. Tellegen. & B. Kaemmer, 1989). Results indicated that marital satisfaction was predicted by the person's own level of anxiety and depression (i.e., actor effects) and by his or her spouse's level of depression only (i.e., partner effects). Findings also indicated that (a) there were no significant gender differences in the magnitude of effects, (b) depression effects were significantly stronger than anxiety effects, (c) actor effects were significantly stronger than partner effects, and (d) there were interactions between actor and partner effects for depression only.

Psychopathology and marital satisfaction: the importance of evaluating both partners.

Increasing evidence supports an association between symptomatic depression and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), although no single study has compared multiple depression scales. We hypothesized that higher levels of symptomatic depression assessed from different depression scales were associated with the risk of CHD. We examined this relation in the Normative Aging Study, a prospective cohort of older men. A total of 1,305 men free of diagnosed CHD in 1986 completed the revised Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2). We categorized scores for the MMPI-2 D, MMPI-2 DEP, and Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) depression scales. During an average 7.0 years of follow-up, 110 cases of incident CHD occurred, including 30 cases of nonfatal myocardial infarction, 20 cases of fatal CHD, and 60 cases of angina pectoris. Compared with men reporting the lowest level of depression, men in the highest level of depression had multivariate-adjusted relative risks of incident CHD (total CHD and angina) of 1.46 (95% confidence interval 0.83 to 2.57), 2.07 (95% confidence interval 1.13 to 3.81), and 1.73 (95% confidence interval 0.97 to 3.10) for the MMPI-2 D, MMPI-2 DEP, and SCL-90 scales, respectively. Similar RRs were obtained for each CHD subtype according to each depression scale. We found strong dose-response relations between level of depression measured by the MMPI-2 DEP scale and incidence of both angina pectoris (p value for trend, 0.039) and CHD (p value for trend, 0.016). Among older men, symptomatic depression measured by any of 3 depression scales may be positively associated with the risk of CHD.

Self-medication hypothesis: Connecting affective experience and drug choice.

Building on results reported in Sellbom, Graham, and Schenk (2005), in this study, we examined the incremental validity of the newly introduced MMPI–2 (Butcher et al., 2001) Restructured Clinical (RC) scales (Tellegen et al., 2003) over both the Clinical and Content scales. Participants were 647 clients in private practice who were administered the MMPI–2 and the Multiaxial Diagnostic Inventory (Doverspike, 1990) early in therapy. The results indicate that the RC scales had acceptable internal consistency, reduced intercorrelations (compared to the Clinical scales), and promising convergent and discriminant validity. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the RC scales added incrementally to both the Clinical and Content scales in predicting self reported clinical symptoms. The incremental contribution of the MMPI-2 Content Scales to the prediction of scores on self-report measures of personality and psychopathology was investigated. The MMPI-2, Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Personality Inventory, anti Symptom Checklist-90-Revised were administered to 596 subjects: 339 women anti 257 men. Zero-order correlational analyses indicated that both clinical and Content Scales correlated with each of the criterion measures. In all but one case, an MMPI-2 Content Scale was found to have the highest correlation with the extratest variables. Combined hierarchical, stepwise regression analyses demonstrated that the MMPI-2 Content Scales possess incremental validity vis-a-vis the clinical scales for both genders in relation to all of the criterion measures.
