In swarm robotics multiple robots collectively solve problems by forming advantageous structures and behaviors similar to the ones observed in natural systems, such as swarms of bees, birds, or fish. However, the step to industrial applications has not yet been made successfully. Literature is light on real-world swarm applications that apply actual swarm algorithms. Typically, only parts of swarm algorithms are used which we refer to as basic swarm behaviors. In this paper we collect and categorize these behaviors into spatial organization, navigation, decision making, and miscellaneous. This taxonomy is then applied to categorize a number of existing swarm robotic applications from research and industrial domains. Along with the classification, we give a comprehensive overview of research platforms that can be used for testing and evaluating swarm behavior, systems that are already on the market, and projects that target a specific market. Results from this survey show that swarm robotic applications are still rare today. Many industrial projects still rely on centralized control, and even though a solution with multiple robots is employed, the principal idea of swarm robotics of distributed decision making is neglected. We identified mainly following reasons: First of all, swarm behavior emerging from local interactions is hard to predict and a proof of its eligibility for applications in an industrial context is difficult to provide. Second, current communication architectures often do not match requirements for swarm communication, which often leads to a system with a centralized communication infrastructure. Finally, testing swarms for real industrial applications is an issue, since deployment in a productive environment is typically too risky and simulations of a target system may not be sufficiently accurate. In contrast, the research platforms present a means for transforming swarm robotics solutions from theory to prototype industrial systems.

Swarm Robotic Behaviors and Current Applications

This paper proposes an improved version of the grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) based on the opposition-based learning (OBL) strategy called OBLGOA for solving benchmark optimization functions and engineering problems. The proposed OBLGOA algorithm consists of two stages: the first stage generates an initial population and its opposite using the OBL strategy; and the second stage uses the OBL as an additional phase to update the GOA population in each iteration. However, the OBL is applied to only half of the solutions to reduce the time complexity. To investigate the performance of the proposed OBLGOA, six sets of experiment series are performed, and they include twenty-three benchmark functions and four engineering problems. The experiments revealed that the results of the proposed algorithm were superior to those of ten well-known algorithms in this domain. Eventually, the obtained results proved that the OBLGOA algorithm can provide competitive results for optimization engineering problems compared with state-of-the-art algorithms.

Improved grasshopper optimization algorithm using opposition-based learning

Accurate stock market prediction is of great interest to investors; however, stock markets are driven by volatile factors such as microblogs and news that make it hard to predict stock market index based on merely the historical data. The enormous stock market volatility emphasizes the need to effectively assess the role of external factors in stock prediction. Stock markets can be predicted using machine learning algorithms on information contained in social media and financial news, as this data can change investors’ behavior. In this paper, we use algorithms on social media and financial news data to discover the impact of this data on stock market prediction accuracy for ten subsequent days. For improving performance and quality of predictions, feature selection and spam tweets reduction are performed on the data sets. Moreover, we perform experiments to find such stock markets that are difficult to predict and those that are more influenced by social media and financial news. We compare results of different algorithms to find a consistent classifier. Finally, for achieving maximum prediction accuracy, deep learning is used and some classifiers are ensembled. Our experimental results show that highest prediction accuracies of 80.53% and 75.16% are achieved using social media and financial news, respectively. We also show that New York and Red Hat stock markets are hard to predict, New York and IBM stocks are more influenced by social media, while London and Microsoft stocks by financial news. Random forest classifier is found to be consistent and highest accuracy of 83.22% is achieved by its ensemble.

A Systematic Review of the Whale Optimization Algorithm: Theoretical Foundation, Improvements, and Hybridizations

To overcome the curse of dimensionality problem, a binary variant of the whale optimization algorithm (bWOA) with V-shaped is proposed. A hyperbolic tangent function is employed as a fitness function for mapping the continuous values to binary ones. Feature selection (FS) has attracted much attention in recent years and played a critical role in dealing with high-dimensional problems and can be modeled as an optimization problem. Eleven datasets from UCI repository from various applications are used. During the experiments, the effectiveness of feature selection is tested via a different type of data and size of features in the generic dataset. Furthermore, Wilcoxons rank-sum nonparametric statistical test was carried out at 5% significance level to judge whether the results of the proposed algorithms differ from those of the other compared algorithms in a statistically significant way. The quantitative and qualitative results revealed that the proposed binary algorithm in the FS domain is capable of minimizing the number of selected features as well as maximizing the classification accuracy within an appropriate time.
