Achieving sustainable development presents all countries and the global policy community with a set of significant development challenges that are almost entirely geographic in nature. Many of the issues impacting sustainable development can be analyzed, modeled, and mapped within a geographic context, which in turn can provide the integrative framework necessary for global collaboration, consensus and evidence-based decision-making. Sustainable development and geospatial information: a strategic framework for integrating a global policy agenda into national geospatial capabilities

We present an error-control coding technique for optical communications It consists of the serial concatenation of an outer convolutional code, an interleaver, a bit-accumulator, and pulse-position modulation (PPM) We refer to the coded modulation as serially concatenated PPM, or SCPPM The encoding is accomplished with simple shift register operations and a table look-up to map code bits to PPM symbols The code is decoded with an iterative demodulator–decoder, using standard turbo-decoding techniques For system constraints typical of the Mars Laser Communications Demonstration, simulations indicate operation within 1 dB of capacity We show that the standard decoder can be simplified by precomputing certain edge likelihoods on a reduced-edge trellis, without approximation or degradation, and that an M -input ∗ max function may be distributed and pipelined A further simplification allows one to discard many of the channel observables, with negligible degradation

Coded Modulation for the Deep-Space Optical Channel: Serially Concatenated Pulse-Position Modulation

A stress test methodology aimed at increasing chances of discovering faults related to network traffic in distributed systems is presented. The technique uses the UML 2.0 model of the distributed system under test, augmented with timing information, and is based on an analysis of the control flow in sequence diagrams. It yields stress test requirements that are made of specific control flow paths along with time values indicating when to trigger them. Different variants of our stress testing technique already exist (they stress different aspects of a distributed system) and we focus here on one variant that is designed to identify and to stress test the system at the instant when data traffic on a network is maximal. Using a real-world distributed system specification, we design and implement a prototype distributed system and describe, for that particular system, how the stress test cases are derived and executed using our methodology. The stress test results indicate that the technique is significantly more effective at detecting network traffic-related faults when compared to test cases based on an operational profile.

Practical TCP/IP and Ethernet Networking

This chapter provides a general overview of the TCP/IP, which has become the de facto standard worldwide for industrial and telecommunications applications. TCP/IP or the TCP/IP protocol suite is not limited to the TCP and IP protocols, but consist of a multitude of interrelated protocols that occupy the upper three layers of the ARPA model. TCP/IP does not include the bottom network access layer, but depends on it for access to the medium. The network interface layer is responsible for transporting data (frames) between hosts on the same physical network. The Internet layer is primarily responsible for the routing of packets from one host to another. The emphasis is on “packets” as opposed to frames, since at this level the data has not yet been placed in a frame for transmission.
