Decrease of soil fertility and release of mercury following deforestation in the Andean Amazon, Napo River Valley, Ecuador.
N. Mainville,J. Webb,Marc Lucotte,Robert Davidson,Oscar Betancourt,Edwin Cueva,Donna Mergler +6 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that deforestation and the associated Hg leaching could contribute to the fish Hg contamination measured in the Napo River watershed.

Mercury in Fish-eating Communities of the Andean Amazon, Napo River Valley, Ecuador
Jena Webb,Jena Webb,Nicolas Mainville,Donna Mergler,Marc Lucotte,Oscar Betancourt,Robert Davidson,Edwin Cueva,Edy Quizhpe +8 more
TL;DR: The study shows that sociocultural factors are important in determining mercury exposure, and two village communities consume different species of fish with different frequencies, leading to differential exposure and mercury concentrations in hair samples.

Long-range effect of cyanide on mercury methylation in a gold mining area in southern Ecuador.
Jean Remy Davée Guimarães,Oscar Betancourt,Marcio Rodrigues Miranda,Ramiro Barriga,Edwin Cueva,Sebastián Betancourt +5 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that free cyanide oxidation was slower than would be expected from the high water turbulence, resulting in a long-range inhibition of bacterial activity and hence mercury methylation in sediments along the Puyango river watershed.

- 01 Jan 2012
TL;DR: With the discovery of mining and metal-working techniques in ancient times, metals, metals pollution, and human health were linked (Nriagu 1996), and adverse health effects associated with exposure to metals have been at the root of occupational health as mentioned in this paper.
